...Arthur

We both love it, love that it means 'bear like' also really like Art as a nn, or Bear even.

Just wanted to know general thoughts on it, I feel like it's a strong English name which we both wanted, but I can't help wondering what other people will think?

It is very popular, and has risen quickly in the charts. I love it though, it’s one of my favourite boys names.

Liv5417 · 03/07/2020 20:40

Absolutely love it, it's on my list, however it's incredibly popular x

Thistlegirl4 · 03/07/2020 20:46

I like it. It is a good strong solid name.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 03/07/2020 20:48

I really don’t get the hype. It’s not even one of those names where it’s so awful it’s spilled over into adorable such as Norman Percy or Herbert

SingingWren · 03/07/2020 20:52

@Awwlookatmybabyspider I did really like Percy but other half not keen haha.

@Liv5417 I had heard it's increasingly popular, but I don't know any babies or children so I guess I'm ignorant to that!
I don't mind that it's popular though, I feel like it's timeless and not gimmicky etc.

Yes, it's a perfectly good choice.

Whatsyourflava · 03/07/2020 21:01

It's so so lovely. A perfect name! Yes it is getting more popular but you're right to say it's not a trendy gimmicky name as it's been in and out of the top 100 through history. A classic

I like Percy too but I know many on here don't. How about Percy as the middle name?
Arthur Percy - great!

RuthW · 03/07/2020 21:02

Lovely but very popular

Topseyt · 03/07/2020 21:04

I like Arthur.

MikeUniformMike · 03/07/2020 21:04

Very popular, but a classic name. Not keen on Art or Bear.

Pippilsngstrumpfi · 03/07/2020 21:06

Rising up the charts and very fashionable now.

Pippilsngstrumpfi · 03/07/2020 21:08

Don't like Art. It's a subject like Music or PE Grin

FizzyGreenWater · 04/07/2020 00:26

Nice, know several. However I HATE Art - it makes me think of Art Garfunkel, it’s just a weird creepy name. And despite Arthur being popular now I’ve never heard any shortened to Art. So maybe other people dislike it too! Or, maybe it’s because it doesn’t sound like it’s short for Arthur because the sound is a th not a t I suppose?

locked2020 · 04/07/2020 01:09

Like it

macdhui · 04/07/2020 01:12

Love it

Anon0998 · 04/07/2020 04:32

Love but popular like above, just do whatever you connect with

Wowcherarestalkingme · 04/07/2020 04:45

I have one so I am biased. It is very popular now though. I hadn’t heard of any when we had DS. Not sure if it would have put me off if I’d known how popular it would have become, probably not as I do still love it. I also love Percy but DH hated it.

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 04/07/2020 04:51

Awful. Too posh and old mannish for me.

Cbeebiesrehab · 04/07/2020 08:11

It is very popular-I think it’s one of the fastest rising boys names in the most current statistics, considered it ourselves but OH and BIL struggle with their THs so would have been Arfur! Also it’s not an English name but CelticWinkWink

Pippilsngstrumpfi · 04/07/2020 08:12

If you have to shorten it, Arth is better than Art!

Elmo230885 · 04/07/2020 08:16

Its my LOs middle name. Was tied for his first with his eventual name. Arthur is prominent in both our families (older generation, not young children). My husband really wanted an Arthur but when he was born he didn't look like an Arthur.

daisypond · 04/07/2020 09:38

It’s fine. It’s a name of a certain type. It’s quite popular now, and I think it will date - in the sense that it will mark him as a person of a certain decade, but that’s really hard to avoid anyway. But it’s lots better than many other names I see mentioned on here.

SingingWren · 04/07/2020 13:14

Thanks for replies, I'm still set on it, maybe not bother with nicknames though! It's the only name I've been remotely excited about so I guess that's a sign it's the one.

I know it's popular but I don't like unusual or obscure names, so I'd rather a popular nane that I love rather than a less popular name that I'm not in love with. Thanks again all!

Millicent10 · 04/07/2020 20:55

What are your other options? There are 4 x Arthur’s in my DDs nursery so it depends if you are worried about popularity. I agree about the dating, I have Arthur’s in my family tree from 80/90 odd years ago and then you don’t hear of it again until 5 -10 years ago (apart from Arthur Fowler in Eastenders!). But If you love it, use it. Whatever the name there will always be someone that doesn’t like it.

SingingWren · 04/07/2020 23:50

@Millicent10 There are no other options I'm afraid, neither of us like any other boy names. The road to Arthur was stressful!
