If your DC have names with very different “styles”

... why is that, and how did you decide on the names of DC2/3/4+?

Just being nosy. We have a very mixed heritage in our family. DS1 has a very Spanish name and DS2 has a very classic Greek mouthful of a boy’s name. They’re very different names, so I wonder about choosing a name for a currently-hypothetical DC3...

Ours are quite mixed.
Ds1 quite modern
Dd classic/popular
Ds2 biblical
Ds3 unisex
They all kind of go. We live abroad. 2 of the names are international the others are from the country we live in -but all are easy to pronounce and spell for our family in Uk.
They are all fairly short and simple. I chose names we liked and didn't worry about whether they go.
My husband and I have standard British names so our names don't really go with our kid's names.
What mattered to me was that they were names we liked and they weren't going to be made fun of.
Not sure if that helps you...

Since you already have a mix of names it doesn’t really matter. Our first two (girl then boy) are what more old fashioned names and go together. Our third, a boy, has what is now seen as a more modern and unisex name (even though it is actually a fairly old boy’s name). We found naming the boys way harder and it was literally the only one we both agreed on and the mix across them seemed fine.

Go with what you like. I think the main thing is to avoid having several children with one type of name, and just one without.

My grandmother is one of 4, 3 have very Welsh names and 1 doesn't and it stands out. Think Esyllt, Llyr, Iolo and Malcolm. The family has always wondered why Malcolm didn't get a Welsh name.

As both of your DC have names from different styles then you can pick pretty much anything which doesn't clash with either existing name.

Totally agree with @CaffiSaliMali

DD has an Irish name, DC2 will have either a Welsh or English name depending on the sex. They don't really go at all. But then they're individuals, and won't long be grouped together. We've just chosen names we like.

Mine are mixed, we went with whatever we liked at the time. They aren’t too ‘out there’ however! Just not as traditional as our families had hoped!

Mine and my DH’s families have very traditional names think.. Edward, Henry, Peter, Beatrice, Camilla, Arabella...
So the ‘traditional’ names that are lovely were taken by family members each side so we wanted to avoid them.
I say go with whatever name you like, living around very traditional names I find it refreshing hearing different beautiful names on here!

My two boys have two syllable Celtic names.

The DSC have top ten type names for England. DSD has one of those many syllable frilly names that seem to be so popular; DSS has a name associated with the royal family.

Our new baby will have a two syllable Celtic name, so it’ll match my boys. But actually DH chose it.

Daughter (eldest) has a vintagey twee cottagey pretty name. Twin boys are biblical. So different styles but I feel they all sit together.

Millicent10 · 04/07/2020 20:59

I was just reading an interview with Ulricka Johnson and noticed that her children have very different type names, although they all have different fathers so this obviously makes a

difference. I would say that my dd and ds is very different in terms of background but the actual sound is very similar, same number of syllables and letters.

A neighbour has 3 children with very different names. I hadn't thought about it until now, other than one of them having an unusual biblical name.

CatkinToadflax · 05/07/2020 17:46

A friend has two DC with very distinctive, quite unusual names (think along the lines of Theodorus and Clementina, and neither name is ever abbreviated) and then the third is a name similar in popularity and style to Tom. They are all lovely names, but Tom is vey noticeably different to the others.
