John James? Or John-James

Definitely no hyphen!

NotNowPlzz · 28/06/2020 13:56

I like it but without the hyphen. Prefer Jean-Jacques but only works if you're French

Destroyedpeople · 28/06/2020 13:56

Like as a double barrelled first name?
Yes I like it but prefer John-Joseph so they can be Jonjo.

DramaAlpaca · 28/06/2020 13:58

Definitely no hyphen.

BlueBirdGreenFence · 28/06/2020 13:59

Lose the hyphen. Otherwise it's lovely.

ineedaholidayy · 28/06/2020 14:01

Yes but both as a first name. Prefer no hyphenation but would people know it was one name, not a middle name?

@Destroyedpeople love John Joseph too

Even if you hyphenate, James will most likely get dropped and he'll just go by John. Everyone I know who has a hyphenated name goes by only the first name day-to-day. You're better off having John as a first name and James as a middle name.

For what it's worth I think John James is a bit of a mouthful anyway.

ineedaholidayy · 28/06/2020 14:56

@LotusClover yeah that puts me off as I only like them together. Same with John Joseph :/

Are you in the UK? If so, I think the birth certificate will bunch all the voluntary names into the "forename" box on the legal record. So he can (legally) be John Lastname, or John James Lastname, or John James Alexander Evaristo Terwilliger Wilkins Pommery Filibuster King George The Sixth Lastname, it doesn't matter.

In real life: introduce him as John James, and teach him to do the same. Put John James in the box for "known as" when you register him for school. But be aware, people can and will call him John or Johnny or James or Jamie or Jim or Jimmy or JJ. And he might prefer any one of those - just like an Elizabeth that you envision as Beth but ends up being an Eli, or an Alexander who you think of as Sandy but ends up preferring Al or Alec.

Don't like hyphenated names but either name on own would be lovely

bridgetreilly · 28/06/2020 18:44

Chances of this kid choosing to be known as John-James or John James once he's a teenager? Zero.

Call him what you want, OP, but remember you're naming a person who will have his own opinions and rights.

123Dancewithme · 28/06/2020 20:31

John James without the hyphen is lovely.

Cotswoldmama · 28/06/2020 20:53

Agree with everyone else don't like hyphens in names. It also makes me think on John James from big brother all those years ago!
