Hi all - thoughts on Alexander nn Alexi for a boy - does it sound like a girl's name? I like it but not sure... opinions please MN!

'Alex' has always been a name that could potentially be a boy or a girl, I don't think adding the 'i' makes it any more or any less male / female sounding. For me, it works for either.
(Though I'd think of 'Lexi' as a girl)

What would put me off now though, is the popularity of the smart speaker Alexa.
Shame, as I like both Alexander and Alexandra (and, by default, Alex) as names.

Do you mean the Russian boys name Alexei? It is properly pronounced as Alex- sey. English speaking people tend to pronounce it the wrong way as Alexi.

whattodo235 · 28/06/2020 01:11

No it would be from the Greek Alexios rather than the Russian so Alexi...
Yes the Alexa thing is also annoying although not sure if people would automatically think of Alexa hopefully?! But pls tell me if I'm wrong!

I'd assume he's Russian

LotusClover · 28/06/2020 05:46

I assume you're pronouncing it like Lexi with an A at the start? If so then yes it's very feminine to my ears.

SaltySammie · 28/06/2020 05:49

First thing I thought of was Alexa I'm sorry!

NoAdventureNoTime · 28/06/2020 06:32

It's fine. I have an Alexander and we do actually call him Alexy for his nn, it's never crossed my mind that it's girly or something else as it just sort of developed as his alternative name. Thinking about it though a lot of people have nn not even related to their names at all.

Flowerpowersy · 28/06/2020 07:12

It sounds feminine, like a mix of Alexa and Lexi!

Blursula · 28/06/2020 07:27

I like it, one we considered. I prefer Alexei though

GlamGiraffe · 28/06/2020 07:36

I like it and it's never been feminine in my world. I don't like Alex as a shortening. I hear boys referred to as Alexi, not at all strange. Maybe it depends where you live?

Wecandothis99 · 28/06/2020 07:53

Oh never heard that before but I like it for boy or girl

eatthepineapple · 28/06/2020 08:14

I used to teach a boy Alexi. I think he was french maybe...Can't quite remember, it was a good few years ago now. Anyway, I think it's nice - don't think it sounds particularly girlie but I suppose it wouldn't surprise me if it was a boy or girl. He was a nice kid (this would affect my feeling towards the name lol - as a teacher there are loads of names I wouldn't choose!!)

daisypond · 28/06/2020 08:18

I think it’s fine, though I would assume it was the Russian Alexei. Alexios is nice if that’s the Greek form.

DonLewis · 28/06/2020 08:21

I know a Lex, short for a European version of Alexander. Not that keen tbh, sounds unfinished. But, he's a lovely kid and it's not my place to care about his name! You've gotta do what you've gotta do!

Muppetry76 · 28/06/2020 08:26

My friend is Alexis (m), white, British. He went by Alex and used to get so angry at his parents lumbering him with such an unusual name, especially when it came to any sort of data capture eg 'Alex, short for Alexander?'

Your baby will choose their own nn however you determine it at birth, but please don't make it an uphill struggle from the start

SoftBlocks · 28/06/2020 08:28

I prefer the Alexei spelling but yes, great name.

Haz1516 · 28/06/2020 08:29

I'd assume it was supposed to be Alexei. Go for full Alexios otherwise.

Destroyedpeople · 28/06/2020 08:33

So if he is Greek it will be Alexios if you are talking about him and Alexi if you are talking to him? So Alexios on the BC?

Sevo7 · 28/06/2020 08:36

I love the name Alexi and don’t think it matters if it’s a boy or a girl for a nickname as it’s pretty neutral like Georgie imo. My DD is Alexis and I choose the name because I’ve always loved it and like that it had Alex and Lexi as a NN.
However the Alexa thing does come up often and drives me mad! For that reason she is primarily known as Lexi (she’s only a toddler, so trying to stick to one name) My hope is a new device comes out before she’s older and the Alexa is forgotten about!

midnightstar66 · 28/06/2020 08:37

I like it and being as it's just a nn short for Alexander I don't think it matters where it comes from and you can pronounce it how were you like. People will pronounce it as you do for the most part. At automatically asinine Alexi was a bit too. The feminine version wound be Alexa and Alex is accepted unisex anyway.

eatthepineapple · 28/06/2020 18:11

Ah maybe my pupil was Alexis actually, having seen someone mention it it rings a bell
