Samson?

I quite like the nickname Sam for a boy - however don’t particularly like the common full version Samuel and much prefer Samson, which seems a perfectly acceptable name that’s also quite traditional, just not as commonplace. Do people think this name is weird - or do they like it? Thanks Smile

I really like it myself. Not usually keen on biblical names but Samson is great. I'm the same as you op, not keen on Samuel.

There was a thread on Samson not long ago, if you wanted to have a read of opinions. I think the trouble with the name is that is so closely associated with the biblical character, and his enormous strength, that if your boy turned out to be tiny or very slender, it might seem rather ridiculous. The sound of the name is quite pleasing to my ears. But there is a little Samson who goes to my local play group, and every time I hear his mum call his name, I feel like sniggering a bit.

I like it!

@Orphlids I’m afraid I have to disagree with what you said about if he turned out to be “tiny and very slender” (this is unlikely anyway as both me and DH are quite tall and not stick thin). If he had a name that was associated with power, it would help him appear slightly more powerful in people’s minds due to the imagery it creates than if he had a name like Timothy for example (this would just make things worse for him IMO). People make judgements about a persons character based on their name, so a stronger name would help his case IMO.

I like it. I don’t often hear it.

I like it but would personally use the diminutive Sonny. Considered it but BIL is called Samuel so decided against it.

Samuel is much nicer.

I love it. Not so keen on Samuel, which reminds me of mules.
