Hi all - desperate for some help/advice!
Our DS2 is due in a week and we need a name that works in English as well as Greek.

Our front runners currently are:

Xander (I don't much like Alexander)
Marcus
Hector

Others that have come up:

Ajax
Lysander
Leander

I love Rafael, but my partner doesn't!

Help! Any thoughts on the above/other suggestions?

Andrew is Greek and means manly

whattodo235 · 18/06/2020 15:52

I think we are leaning towards one of these:

Xander
Lysander nn Xander
Marcus

Would you mind telling me your order of preference?! And any other name ideas, they're really helpful, thank you!!

I love Hector and Lysander.

Destroyedpeople · 18/06/2020 20:48

' of Hector and Lysander/and such great names as these'...isn't that a line from the British Grenadiers'?

They are great names...

Charlottejbt · 18/06/2020 20:51

(The was a DJ on our local Heart FM station and he was called Paris Troy and I know he was from a Greek family).

Did he get sacked? :)

I really like Lysander and Marcus. My mind is kind of blank (haven't needed a boy's name for 20 years, went with Alexander) but I like Dionysius. I always thought Cleon was a nice name, although Aristophanes was very rude about Cleon the politician. Get the Oxford Classical Dictionary and/or Liddell and Scott's Greek dictionary and just make your way through it methodically, there will be lots of inspiration there!

Antonis?

Booboostwo · 18/06/2020 20:57

I don’t know how bothered you are about this but
Alexandros is a popular Greek name, but no one is called Xander in Greece as far as I know (I am Greek)
The Greek versions are Lysandros and Markos. Lysandros has the accent in the first syllable so it is pronounced quite differently from Lysander.

Phaidon

RickOShay · 18/06/2020 21:07

Dimitrios. Gorgeous name.

Charlottejbt · 18/06/2020 21:09

@Booboostwo Is there a short version of Alexandros, like how a British Alexander might go by Alex and a Russian might go by Sasha? I'm just curious because my Alexander doesn't like his name being shortened, and I'm happy about that because there are so many Alexes my age and it's a bit meh. (Same with Victoria/ Vicky in my 70s generation.)

Booboostwo · 18/06/2020 21:22

Alexis or Alexios are common shortenings of Alexandros Charlottejbt

I can’t help myself...Sophocles was a playwright. Popular philosophers’ names are Socratis, Platonas and Aristotelis.
