Stolen name

Has anyone ever stolen your name? Whether it was intentional or just absolutely bad luck and their baby just happened to be born before yours and used the name?

There's a boy's name I absolutely adored, always pictured myself with a DS named this. Yet a couple years ago one of my cousins used it and I will admit it did hurt a little even if I'm not having DC for the next 5-8 years or so.

Did you still use the name or found a new one? Please share your stories!

Aw shit, you should have patented it.

bridgetreilly · 16/06/2020 18:18

No one owns a name, so no one can steal it. Hope that helps.

Apolloanddaphne · 16/06/2020 18:19

No-one 'steals' names. If you a name then others are bound to like it too. seems a pointless thing to worry about given you don't even plan to have children for a long time and may not have a boy if you did. You could still use the name anyway.

Apolloanddaphne · 16/06/2020 18:19

I meant if you like a name.

Anoisagusaris · 16/06/2020 18:22

Hopefully you will mature by the time you are old enough to give birth.

Angelonia · 16/06/2020 18:22

A close friend did this to me - it was accidental, as I hadn't mentioned our first choice name to her, but it did stop me using the name. Luckily we found another we loved just as much.

DysonFury · 16/06/2020 18:23

Just don't tell anyone the name till spawning day?

purplecorkheart · 16/06/2020 18:23

I have two sets of cousins with the first names. Their parents loved the names and it did not matter to anyone that their sibling had already used the name.

WorraLiberty · 16/06/2020 18:24

You should've phoned the police.

freezingbreeze · 16/06/2020 18:24

I'm pretty sure I explained that was a bad luck situation and not someone intentionally stealing the name ???? But I was asking for everyone's stories on both types of situations.

When people get upset about this it’s usually a really common name like Ben or Olivia that has been so cruelly appropriated which is actually quite funny

Carouselfish · 16/06/2020 18:35

Yeah, a close friend used my boy name that is rare. I didn't think I'd have another baby so wasn't too bothered when she told me it was the only one she liked. Now, I'm pregnant, sex unknown, and that was the only boy name my partner agreed with me on, so it's a bit of a pain.

Christmastree43 · 16/06/2020 18:40

Hey OP I'm currently expecting, due in 2.5 weeks and am in an NCT WhatsApp group, the second baby that was born in our group about a week ago was given our first choice name! I had a pang of feeling gutted but then thought it really isn't going to put me off. If it was a family member or close friend it'd probably be a different story, luckily my family and friends don't share my taste Grin

Also we don't know if we're having a boy or girl so may not end up being an issue.

It did make me think, if out of eleven babies due in the NCT group, there are going to be 2 with that name, then it's probably going to be a popular name (even though it's uncommon now) so I better get used to it.

I would say from my experience when you're actually pregnant you may change what names you like so if you're planning to wait a few years don't worry about it too much.

bubbleup · 16/06/2020 18:41

Two different people can have the same name.

Wow some of the responses on this thread #rude

AzraiL · 16/06/2020 18:47

A woman I knew through friends (and got weird vibes from, she was their in-law) and I happened to be pregnant at the same time (with our second, both boys) and kept asking me what I was planning on naming my child. I got a weird feeling and even though I don't own the name I chose I didn't want to give her the satisfaction of annoying me so I gave her a name I wasn't at all intending on using (let's say Dennis).

Guess what she named her son when she gave birth a few weeks before me. Dennis

So I happily named my child the name I had chosen (we'll call him Adam), and when she visited she asked if I was upset she had named her child Dennis.

I said 'why would I be, I knew I wanted to name my son Adam since I was nine. I suggested Dennis for you!'

She looked pretty put-out.

majesticallyawkward · 16/06/2020 18:50

You can't steal a name, it's not a problem if more than one person has a name (unless you're Elon Musks kid, no one else should be lumbered with that).

I'm more annoyed when people feel the need to comment on a name choice 'that makes me think of ' or 'what made you go with that'.

FairfaxAikman · 16/06/2020 18:53

I'm my online antenatal group there's three girls with one name and two with another. All born in the same month.

Didn't put anyone off.

DS was the last of the group to be born and if anyone had used his name (they didn't) I would still have gone ahead.

He's the third generation in my family with the name, and that didn't bother me either. He's not named after the others, we just liked the name and wouldn't let the family connection put us off.

Oldest one is known by one short version, middle by another to his friends but the full version to his parents and DS is the full version or "little [full name]"

WhoUsedMyName · 16/06/2020 18:55

I have a lady I work with she's 14weeks ahead of me and she found out she's having a girl and has picked the exact name I wanted so bit annoying as when I go back to work after I'm sure everyone will think I stole her name (If we have a girl). But in our family we have cousins big maisie little Maisie I have a grandad John and an uncle john I don't think people really notice I also know a few family's that name first sons after dad or grandad

Sweettea1 · 16/06/2020 19:09

Not stolen no but me an friend where due weeks apart an both had same name she was due before me so I changed name didn't want her saying I was copying

MikeUniformMike · 16/06/2020 19:11

Three of my first cousins, who are also first cousins to each other, used a certain popular name for their sons. 2 of them have the same surname.

Two first cousins used the same fairly underused name for their daughter, within months of each other. Both are in the same peer group, but have different surnames

On the other side, two first cousins used a fairly underused name for their sons. There is a few years age difference and they have different surnames.

BabyDust13 · 16/06/2020 19:13

@AzraiL excellent

MikeUniformMike · 16/06/2020 19:14

I was going to not even read the op and suggest that Stolen wasn't that nice a name.
