Don’t like my first name

Hello, I’m a 20 year old guy who doesn’t really like his first name - and it’s only since quarantine I’ve heard you can change it via deed poll. I don’t mind my middle name, so I was thinking of just switching the two names around and have people call me the middle name. How do people on here feel about this? Cheers Smile

You could just have people use your middle name without legally changing it. If it would make you happier using your middle name, you definitely should.

Lots of people use their middle names .

I know several people who just use their middle name without changing it by deed poll. Most of them decided when they were adults that they were going to do it, took some getting used to at first but now I am used to calling them by their ‘new name’.
Personally I’d only get the deed poll change if I wanted to change my name to something completely new.

I did that at about your age. Then after a decade or two I changed back - found I missed the first one. The only people who'll have trouble remembering which one to use are people you don't see very often. Unless your family members don't like the change and are stubborn about it. You should use the name you like. Go for it.

I know a few people who are known by their middle name. If you prefer it then yes, swap them.

Life's too short - change it. No need for a deed poll, do as per PP suggested.

I just use my middle name. Easy. Also changed at a similar age so it means that if someone randomly stops me I can date when I last saw them. Northern? Hmm must be pre-2000 . . .

Only concern for me is when I was in hospital everyone used my legal first name which I found upsetting. I'm therefore considering a legal change after 20+ years with "new" name.
