Hi,
I'd like your opinions on how Jake sounds with our surname- Collingwood.
I'm worried that when said out loud Jake Collingwood blends to the point where it sounds like one word?
We love the name Jacob for our son, due in September. We recognise that's its likely to be shortened to Jake at some point which is why I want to make sure it sounds ok with our surname. Am I over thinking this?
Thanks!

Lovely.
I wouldn't be worried about it.

Smarshian · 15/06/2020 21:43

It’s lovely. Disclaimer: my son is called Jake. Smile

My 36yo son is called Jake after my late grandfather.
Brilliant name!

I love it. I have 2 dd but would have wanted Jake in my name list!

You're not overthinking it. The "k" in Jake does run in to the C of Collinwood. It sounds more like Jay Collinwood than Jake Collinwood as you'd need to consciously pause between the two names otherwise - it doesn't naturally run in to each other. As a person myself with the same name awkwardness, it does make a difference. A nicely flowing name is a great advantage.

However Jacob Collinwood is lovely and flows nicely. Would you use Jay/J as a nn instead of Jake? That's more likely than Jake as a nn anyway.

My DH has a first name that ends with the letter of his last name and it does trip him up and he has to consciously separate the two when he speaks on the phone etc and he wants to avoid the same for our DC. However it's only when he says his full first name, not his nickname. I think it's your full name that you say most often on the phone for example when booking things or speaking to the bank so Jacob Collingwood wouldn't be a problem then. When someone uses their nn they often then don't need to say their last name if you see what I mean, so I think it's fine! And a really lovely name.

@SixtiesDress you've captured exactly what I was concerned about. I'm not averse to the nn 'Jay' actually...mmm

@BarbieandKenBruce Thanks yeah you could be right. It might be a case of using 'Jacob' when also saying his surname. It dies flow better. I definitely want to avoid that awkward pause between names !
