Archie

I loved the name Archie until I came on mumsnet and saw all of the hatred towards it.
I always thought of it as an old fashioned traditional name however the perception I get from this website is that it is very common, I have not heard of one Archie around my area.
Help

I have an Archie, he is 6 now. The only one in his year and I have only ever come across another 1 or 2 during the baby class years.

I don't the massive dislike for the name either 🤷🏽‍♀️

*get the

@PeonyTruffle

Is his name on the BC Archie? I saw some had put Archer on the BC just for more formal things such as interviews? However again I always thought Archie was as much of an older name as it was a young persons.

There is just one at our primary

Subordinateclause · 13/06/2020 15:16

I think it's fine and inoffensive but I teach and have had an Archie every year for several years.

inappropriateraspberry · 13/06/2020 15:20

It's a lovely name, but there are lots of Archies and Alfies around!

TARSCOUT · 13/06/2020 15:25

I absolutely love it, beautiful name.

See where I am from I have never heard of any. My worry is after seeing all the comments that it will become massively popular. My alternative was Frank which my husband really dislikes (was my grandads name) but he thinks not suitable for a baby and again Frankie is massively popular here

It's not the sort of name I'd choose. A lot of people do like it. I don't like a lot of the names listed on here. I don't like Archer at all - fine as a surname.

Archie seems to be very common and popular for dogs.

I can't think of any adult Archies. There used to be an Archie in Emmerdale - I think it was Emmerdale Farm back then - I think there was an Archie in Monarch of the Glen (Sunday night tv series in early 1990s) , and the actor Cary Grant was born Archibald Leach.

If you like it, use it.

daisypond · 13/06/2020 15:31

I think the problem with it is the -ie ending, which lumps it into the thousand other Alfie, Reggie, Ronnie, Charlie - a mix of twee and gangster in the making. Archie is more of a standalone name in Scotland, so doesn’t quite fall into that category.

Leah2005 · 13/06/2020 15:36

My ds middle name is Archie - he is 20 now. I was going to use it as a first name but then Monarch of the Glen came out in Jan 2000 and he was born in Feb 2000. I didn't want people to think I'd named him after that TV series. I still like it although I guess it is more popular now. He has a friend called Frank which is considered a dude's name in his friendship group.

inappropriateraspberry · 13/06/2020 15:36

There is an Archie in my daughter's class, and there was a different one at her playgroup last year.
Also know 3 Alfie's.

Leah2005 · 13/06/2020 15:37

And mumsnet isn't right about everything BTW.....

Glowcat · 13/06/2020 15:37

It is already very popular. In 2018 it was the 16th most popular boys name in England and Wales. Baby names stats are published every August (for England and Wales). This August’s results will cover the year 2019. In 2019 Archie, son of Harry and Meghan was born.

Wecandothis99 · 13/06/2020 15:42

It's very popular to me but I like it

Glowcat · 13/06/2020 15:43

I like it too.

I'm going to be lazy and quote daisypond because I completely agree with her.

I find Archie and its ilk much too cutesy and I dislike cutesy, twee names on both boys and girls. Specifically to Archie, I don't like the sound of the name or how it looks written down. To me it's an ugly name, though it's so popular I'm definitely in the minority.

PeonyTruffle · 13/06/2020 16:14

@thomas89

He is just Archie on the BC, I think Archer is a bit odd and I didn't like Archibald so just Archie it was :)

blosstree · 13/06/2020 16:19

I know an adult Archie who is Archibald, but goes by Archie.

I do think with this fad for cutsie names like Alfie/Archie/Freddie etc. you need to put the full version on the birth certificate. They might not want a cutsie name when they're an adult!

babycakes1010 · 13/06/2020 16:20

I love the name Archie. Would of used it for my first dc but had a girl...still loved it when I had both my son's but was too popular where I live so went with bailey and Frankie instead and haven't met any other children with them names

sweetnosugar · 13/06/2020 16:26

It depends on where you live on the popularity. There are many in my ds school, Same situation in the local mum and baby group, there was 3 there in a group of up to 15.

Sounds silly, but until your children are in school and you attend mother and baby groups you start to get a real idea of popular names in the area.

Flymetothetoon · 13/06/2020 16:58

I know someone with a 10 year old Archie - it's a lovely name.

Laaalaaaa · 13/06/2020 17:01

Name him Archibald then decide later if you want to shorten it. You might meet lots of Archies but not too many Archibald’s.

midsomermurderess · 13/06/2020 17:05

I've always liked it. I'm in Scotland and I think it's just one of those steady names, like Alistair, neither peaking or troughing, just there, always sound.

ISAD0RA · 13/06/2020 17:09

It’s lovely but very popular right now.
