Also, do you know any Ellas?
What do you associate with the name?
What could Ella be a nickname for? I know it can be a stand alone name.
Thanks Cake

It’s nice but very popular. My son’s class (yr 5) has 2 Ellas, Ellie, Bella, a Daniella (goes by Ella) and an Eleanor!

florascotia2 · 13/06/2020 09:34

Ella is a very well-established short form of Elizabeth or Elisabeth. See here:

www.behindthename.com/name/elizabeth

I have also met an Ela (short for Elzbieta, the Polish form of Elizabeth).

BeMorePacific · 13/06/2020 10:49

Do you like Libby? That’s an NN for Elisabeth.
I’m not a huge fan of Ella, but just because I know so many of them, not because it isn’t a nice name xx

whichteaareyou · 13/06/2020 10:50

I love Ella, much nicer than Ellie IMO

Lavenderblueses · 13/06/2020 11:17

Ella is very very popular in the age group 10-15. I feel it's going to sound dated soon.

Lavenderblueses · 13/06/2020 11:18

And no, I don't think it's a natural nickname for Elizabeth. Ellie or Beth possibly.

LoafingLiz · 13/06/2020 11:52

I know in total 12 Ella/Elle/Ellie's.

CaffiSaliMali · 13/06/2020 12:30

I know an Ella who's about 11. Don't know any others but know a few Ellies and an Elle. One of the Ellies and the Elle are both Eleanor on their BC.

I think you can have Ella as a nickname for Elizabeth. If Elizabeth is meaningful to you then it sounds like a winner to me Smile

In England and Wales Ella is the 9th most popular girls name - 2,326 were born in 2018.

Elizabeth is the 47th most popular name with 1,076 born in 2018.

LotusClover · 13/06/2020 13:21

How about Della? I've fallen in love with this name recently, it's a lovely and much less popular alternative to Ella. It could be short for Adela or Adelaide too.

IKEA888 · 13/06/2020 13:24

just my opinion but I doubt it as a " noise name "
Josh, Lilly etc. sound like a noise you'd make.

Eleanor or Ellen is much better

CountessFrog · 13/06/2020 17:57

Eliza. I’m this was on my shortlist.

bridgetreilly · 13/06/2020 17:59

I really don't like it. I think it's actually quite a hard name to say. It's also very popular both as a name and a nickname. I'd pick something else.

bridgetreilly · 13/06/2020 18:00

Gabriella could be Brie or Gabby.

bridgetreilly · 13/06/2020 18:01

Oh, there are so many gorgeous short forms for Elizabeth: Beth, Betty, Betsy, Eliza...

Jj2431 · 13/06/2020 19:14

I know 2 Ella's.

Could be short for Eleanor?

PeskyRooks · 13/06/2020 19:24

Fenella is a great under used name.
Or Elizabeth with Etta as nn?
If you can have Betty from Elizabeth Etta's not much different.

BakewellGin1 · 13/06/2020 19:29

Hmmm I know eight at work (FE) age
I know two Ellie's, one Ella and two Ellie-Mae age 14 to 15
I know one Ella Rose age 3
So popular it seems near me (NE Eng)

I don't mind the name though

ProperVexed · 13/06/2020 19:32

Really lovely name......but....I work in a primary school where every other girl is an Ella, Elinor, Ellie, Eleanor, Elle, Gabriella, Daniela.....

ILoveStickers · 13/06/2020 19:38

I think Ella from Elizabeth is nice, definitely fine as a short form.

The only Ella I know is Eleanor on her birth certificate.

iwilltaketwoplease · 13/06/2020 19:52

My sister is called Ela, she's 14 and an absolute star.

iwilltaketwoplease · 13/06/2020 19:54

Oh I'd like to add it's only one L as Ela is shortened to be like our grandmas name Pamela if that makes sense.

TisConfusion · 13/06/2020 19:57

I know at least 7 Ella’s. I’m not keen on the name, probably due to the popularity of it. Just think there’s much nicer girls names out there.

GuiltyPleasure · 13/06/2020 22:23

I have a 20 year old Ella. It wasn't a massively popular name then. It definitely became much more popular 10-15 years ago. I also know a few Eleanor's who go by Ella as a diminutive. I'm obviously biased but I still like it.

Minniee · 13/06/2020 22:27

Arabella

Loellla

Cinderella
