I'm wondering if anecdotally anyone can tell me whether Rory and Edith (we haven't found out what we are having!) are getting extremely popular? I live in West / South West London - I have a feeling both might have boomed since the last figures came out (2018)!

Thank you :)

OP you can just look and see. This site, based on UK govt statistics, shown numbers and trends:

They are both on steep upward trajectories so I would expect them to continue rising in popularity for a while yet.

The Scottish data is out for 2019 if you want to take a look at that, bearing in mind that Rory is much more popular in Scotland than it is in England.

Chickoletta · 12/06/2020 18:36

Edith is on our girl list!

Whatsyourflava · 12/06/2020 18:36

Both fairly popular and increasing. Rory is much more widespread than Edith

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 12/06/2020 18:40

Worth noting too that Edie is almost as popular as a given name as Edith, at #108 and #91 respectively, so in gauging popularity I would personally combine them.

BikeRunSki · 12/06/2020 18:41

They were very popular in W Yorks 10 years ago! I know several of each, including two sibsets of Rory and Edith.

Teacaketotty · 12/06/2020 18:41

I don’t know anyone who has used either recently - I’m in Scotland though so might not be relevant. Rory, was and is on our potential boy list for future

peajotter · 12/06/2020 18:43

I would expect Edith to increase and be one of the names that peaks for a few years and shows your age. Rory less so as I know Rorys of all ages already. (In Scotland)

Whatsyourflava · 12/06/2020 18:54

Really love both names. Don't know any yet

userabcname · 12/06/2020 19:02

I know a few little Ediths. I don't know a Rory of any age!

isitmethough · 12/06/2020 22:26

Thanks all. As I expected :-/ I don't want something super unusual but I'm quite comfortable with where they are around 50th (if Edith and Edie counted together) and less so if they're gonna be at 10 by next year!

I know 1 Rory (aged 2) and 2 Edith (aged 6 and 5)

MikeUniformMike · 13/06/2020 15:33

Yes, getting popular.

Add Edie and Eden (Confused), and there will be many Edes in her peer group.

Rory is fine but a nightmare if you can't say R.

BadAlice · 13/06/2020 17:32

I like both and have definitely met a couple of each at baby groups in the last year but wouldn’t say they were wildly common yet.

SoftBlocks · 13/06/2020 17:36

Lots of Ediths, only know one Rory.

peajotter · 13/06/2020 22:38

If you want a name that won’t peak then you’re better off looking for one that is on the way down slowly. That was one of my criteria. Lots of classic names are gradually declining due to an increase in diversity. They are the sort of names that never go in or out of fashion. Have a look at babynamevoyager or the uk equivalent.

emilybrontescorsett · 14/06/2020 06:54

I love Edith. I've only ever met one person called it and she was my grandmas neice. I've always liked it. I have only ever known one Rory and that was a long time ago.
