Hi, do you think the name Jesse goes with Ben (big brother) or is it too different styles?
(Big sisters are Emily & Ellena (Ellie)
Thank you x

I don’t think Jesse and Jessie are even pronounced the same.

How are they pronounced?

TabbyMumz · 13/06/2020 08:27

Never heard of Jesse as a boys name and cant see why the extra e on the end. Just silly to me. Looks like someones made it up.

daisypond · 13/06/2020 08:34

You have never heard of Jesse as a boys’ name?! Ever? It’s ancient, Old Testament. It’s much older than Jessie or Jessica.

daisypond · 13/06/2020 09:06

Jesse Owens? Jesse Jackson? Jesse James? Jesse Lingard? None of these famous people? Or lots in films and TV.

UrgentDoughnut · 13/06/2020 09:23

Some people are a bit ignorant. Err sorry but it's true. Just because you've never heard of one of the oldest names around and can't possibly fathom how you might pronounce it, doesn't mean you're correct

Jesse is fine as a name. I don't love it but providing you're not in Scotland, I wouldn't worry too much about big Jessie as an insult

mam0918 · 13/06/2020 10:09

@AuntieStella

I wouldn't mention it in front of an actual person with the name. No one with any manners would.

And even though people might not use the slurs you mention so readily, we all know what they mean. And I do not share your reliance on the assumption that they have gone away. Which is why caution is needed.

I live right up next to scotland and half my friends are scottish, in my entire life (30 years) prior to having my son I never once heard the term 'big Jesse' used outside of billy connollys stand up... I suppose all those people where pre-guessing that I would use it as a childs name one day and sparing my feelings lol

or more logically its simply an almost dead phrase no one uses anymore

as I mentioned I know another Jesse too, have heard of a few more around and its on quite a few friends naming list... its fast growing even here in the northern england and scotland - just because you are holding onto slurs from 50+ years ago doesnt mean the world isnt moving on around you

daisypond · 13/06/2020 10:27

I never once heard the term 'big Jesse'

And you never would, as it doesn’t exist, and has never existed. The phrase is big jessie.

Pippilangstrumpfi · 13/06/2020 10:32

If Jesse is pronounced like Jessie, then it sounds very feminine imo. And it sounds like The Big Jessie!

I only know one Jessie who's full name is Jessica.

Pippilangstrumpfi · 13/06/2020 10:40

I don’t think Jesse and Jessie are even pronounced the same.

Really Confused?

daisypond · 13/06/2020 10:57

I don’t think Jesse and Jessie are even pronounced the same.
I make a subtle distinction between the two, with Jessie having a more definite and enunciated eee at the end. Jesse is more abrupt with that e sound.

AdalbertWaffling · 13/06/2020 10:58

*I don’t think Jesse and Jessie are even pronounced the same.

How are they pronounced?*

They are pronounced the same - Jess-ee, although the male version CAN be pronounced with the e at the end being silent (Jess), that's more common for elderly men who are called Jesse, not so much now. I love the name, and am 24 weeks pregnant with a little boy we're calling Jesse.

It is an Old Testament biblical name, so just as traditional as David, John, Mark, etc. but just not as widely used for some reason.

I don't worry about the Scottish insult being a problem as a) we live in the south east and it is not a used phrase down here, and b) hopefully by the time our babies are big enough to understand, the world will have moved on from using sexist, homophobic slurs in modern-day language

Kittymitty38 · 13/06/2020 11:08

Thank you everyone.
We love that name and we don’t live in Scotland! We are not worried about the insult- that’s an old generation thing. I have 3 kids in primary school and no one there is getting bullied over a name.
My question was just about if you feel that it goes with Ben? He’s big brother.

Thank you! X

mam0918 · 13/06/2020 11:37

@Pippilangstrumpfi

If Jesse is pronounced like Jessie, then it sounds very feminine imo. And it sounds like The Big Jessie!

I only know one Jessie who's full name is Jessica.

Jesse is masculine Jessica is the feminised form of Jesse Jessie is a modern deminutive nickname of Jessica

same as Victoria is the feminine version of Victor, Josephine is the feminine of Joseph and Charlotte is the femmine of Charles etc...

calling Victoria Vic, Josephine Jo or Charlotte Charlie doesnt suddenly make those nickname 'girls names'

so actually Jessie is a masculinised nickname of a feminised masculine name... therefore the pre-dating masculine name litrally cant be 'feminine' lol you have the order the wrong way round

Ellmau · 13/06/2020 12:12

I like Jesse as a name.

My only concern would be that Ben and Jesse sounds a bit like Ben and Jerry.
