Would you choose the Name Thomas if your last name was Jones?
Would you instantly think of Tom Jones?
Although love tommy over Tom.

17caterpillars1mouse · 10/06/2020 19:57

No sorry I wouldn't

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 10/06/2020 19:58

Probably not.

Windyatthebeach · 10/06/2020 19:59

Mm it's not that unusual op...
Grin

CuppaZa · 10/06/2020 20:00

No

MikeUniformMike · 10/06/2020 20:03

You could call his sisters Bridget, Grace and Samantha.

iamme21 · 10/06/2020 20:05

I had 3 boys and despite loving the name I just couldn’t use it for that very reason

4amWitchingHour · 10/06/2020 20:08

Hmm, I think I would. Tom Jones is 80 and doesn't exactly do much now. By the time your DC is an adult the association will have faded to an extent

userabcname · 10/06/2020 20:12

I wouldn't because I don't like the name Thomas. If I did, the association wouldn't bother me. I doubt many kids will know who Tom Jones is by the time the baby starts school. I've taught a Will Smith, an Emma Watson and a Robert (Robbie) Williams. Very few kids ever seemed aware of the corresponding famous people.

MikeUniformMike · 10/06/2020 20:19

Of course you can use it. Tom Jones isn't the name he was born with.

AngelaScandal · 10/06/2020 20:25

Heard mention of Tom Jones on radio yesterday morning. Happy birthday ! So still a lot of name recognition there

SpeedofaSloth · 10/06/2020 20:28

Yes, I would use it.

DramaAlpaca · 10/06/2020 22:03

Probably not, tbh.

bridgetreilly · 10/06/2020 22:20

Yes, it's fine. They're both such common names, it's not like calling him Engelbert Humperdinck.

Heartofglass12345 · 10/06/2020 22:21

My friends little brother was called Thomas and their surname was jones, and we live in wales. It wouldn't bother me to be honest, it'll only be adults that will have heard of him. And if you call him Thomas not Tom that will stick

GeorgiaWeLoveYou · 10/06/2020 22:26

No, I wouldn't. He will become Tom before long and will forever be Tom Jones.

Also...Thomas with the last name Jones is as dull as dishwater (sorry).

Blursula · 10/06/2020 22:56

I know a Tom Jones. It’s mildly amusing for the first 8 seconds and then you forget the connection and move on. He’ll be fine!

Dollywilde · 10/06/2020 23:00

The examiner who passed me on my driving test was called Tom Jones! I asked him if he got Delilah sung at him much and he sighed and said ‘it’s not unusual’. Lovely bloke still gave me my licence though Grin

Sorry Op but it’d be a no from me...

123Dancewithme · 10/06/2020 23:40

I went to school with a Tom Jones. People went on about it all the time.

Lollypop4 · 10/06/2020 23:47

Ive a friend called Thomas Jones, we live in Wales too, His name was naturally shortened to Tom, no one really bothered with the association.
I think by the time your DC goes to school, it wont be an issue at all anyway

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 10/06/2020 23:57

I don't think it'll be an issue. You might get peopl e passing the odd jokey remark. My DD went to school with a Michael Jackson. Everyone was in awe of him, and thought he was great. Grin

Aclh13 · 11/06/2020 02:19

I think with his friends it'll eventual die down, I have cousins called Billy and Mitchell (yes really 🤦‍♀️) and now it's normal unless they meet someone new which as an adult your brain might make the association but it will be irrelevant, realistically how often is someone's full name spoken?

OhTheRoses · 11/06/2020 02:22

Vinnie would be better Wink

Whatsyourflava · 11/06/2020 16:24

I like it. Tom Jones is a cool name And u hope this isn't rude but as both names are fairly mainstream I don't think it sounds strange. I'd find a child called Elvis Madonna or Drake a bit odd

Wow a Michael Jackson that's great! @Awwlookatmybabyspider

Quizeerascal · 11/06/2020 16:44

They're not unusual Grin

Seriously though, neither of them are unusual names and as others have said I'm not sure how much children in 5 years time will know of Tom Jones.

Mamajones89 · 11/06/2020 18:52

It’s not so much children that would notice it’s just comments from others, suppose it would wear off.
