How would you spell it?

Rhymes with "higher"/"buyer" but beginning with an N.

We like this as our girls name, but just wondering how you would spell it to get the right pronunciation?

Nia

Naya I would pronounce Neigh-a
Naiah I would pronounce Neigh-a

missmouse101 · 10/06/2020 12:34

Nya definitely, to avoid mispronunciation.

EPGA2020 · 10/06/2020 12:34

It a nice name, but your daughter will spend her whole life telling people how to spell it.

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 10/06/2020 12:37

Not Nia. It already exists as a long-established and fairly popular Welsh girls’ name, pn nee-a.

Naia like Gaia is prettiest imho. Nya looks how you’d render a mocking taunt.

Ninkanink · 10/06/2020 12:38

Yeah I really don’t like Nia or Nya. Both are ugly IMO.

Naiya, or if you must, Naia.

Ninkanink · 10/06/2020 12:40

Actually, no, Nia isn’t ugly. But everyone would say Neeah. It’s a different name. Nya is a very inelegant way of spelling the name you’re trying to pronounce.

Puppilangstrumpfi · 10/06/2020 12:50

Rhymes with "higher"/"buyer" but beginning with an N.

Then spell it Nigher or Nuyer!

Nya or Nia will be pronounced Nee ah.

Ninkanink · 10/06/2020 12:59

It’s an accent/dialect issue. A bit of a mix up in trying to give examples for the ‘ah’ sound...It’ll never be solved (if you like you could read back through other threads and long protracted discussions on Bath/Bahth/Barth 😉 ).

Ninkanink · 10/06/2020 13:01

I think Nya would most likely be pronounced Neye-ah by the majority. I don’t think many people would read that as having an ee sound.

Frlrlrubert · 10/06/2020 13:40

Hmm,

I'm not sure there's a win here.

Anything Ni might be Nee
Anything Nai or Nei might be Nay

Nyah possibly, I might read it as N-yah but would probably assume that wasn't how it was meant to sound.

I teach a Mia who is Mee-a and a Mia who is My-a, I make notes on my seating plan so I don't forget until I get to know them enough to remember automatically.

DramaAlpaca · 10/06/2020 13:43

@abiirthdaycake

Naia like Gaia for me I think
Yes, same here.
Grufallosfriends · 10/06/2020 13:43

Nigher!

Naia would be Nay a.

LycraLovingLass · 10/06/2020 13:44

I would say Nya or Nyah.

RingaRosie · 10/06/2020 13:45

I’m just seeing Nah...

Grufallosfriends · 10/06/2020 13:45

Nyah or Nigher.

Ninkanink · 10/06/2020 13:45

Nyah is a lot nicer than Nya, imo. But for some reason it has a masculine quality to it, so for that reason I would avoid it for a girl’s name.

carexfairex · 10/06/2020 13:46

I know a Nyah.

It doesn't rhyme with higher or buyer to me though..

Nya/Nyah/Nia/Niah etc all end in ah

Higher/buyer end in er

BikeRunSki · 10/06/2020 13:46

Tha one in DD’s class is Nyah.

redsky75 · 10/06/2020 13:47

How does Naya/Nia/Nya rhyme with higher or buyer?!? Higher and buyer end with er so surely it would be spelt Nyer. Am I missing something? Hmm

PuntoEBasta · 10/06/2020 13:49

Ah, here they are.

OP clearly has a non-rhotic accent.

Grufallosfriends · 10/06/2020 13:50

Rhymes with "higher"/"buyer" but beginning with an N.

The op wants it to rhyme with higher and buyer!

redsky75 · 10/06/2020 14:01

Had to google non rhotic (!) Learned something new today about how rhyming might be different to non rhotic speakers, interesting

Minimoosher · 10/06/2020 19:03

I know a little girl called Inaya pronounced In eye a

carexfairex · 10/06/2020 19:38

Ah, here they are.

??

OP clearly has a non-rhotic accent

It may be clear to you. I was just posting how I would say the name. Had no idea re the non-rhotic accent. Happy to learn. Not so happy it has to come with a sarcastic undertone.

PuntoEBasta · 10/06/2020 19:56

Sorry @carexfairex, no offence meant. I don’t know if you spend much time on the baby name boards but it is an absolute given that as soon as a poster uses an ‘r’ to represent their own non-rhotic pronunciation a klaxon goes out for multiple rhotic speakers to come and state that they have no idea what the OP is talking about. Every time.
