Girls names - opinions on our top two

Hi all

Just looking for some opinions really, to swing us one way or the other. I think these are our last two options but still open to something else coming up, so suggestions welcome.

Names are Carys and Alexandra.

We don’t live in Wales/have Welsh connections but I’m not bothered by that. Last name is one syllable. FWIW middle name will be single syllable starting with J, but I don’t place too much importance on middles - it’s a family name and unlikely to get used too much.

Thanks!

Alexandra is lovely.

Phoebeboo · 10/06/2020 04:47

I would choose Carys it’s beautiful.
I like Alexandra to but not too keen on it shortened to Alex.

Peachbubble · 10/06/2020 06:48

Carys would be my choice.

CoalCraft · 10/06/2020 06:56

Carys is a favourite of mine, would urge you that way ☺️

Mumma4262 · 10/06/2020 07:17

I absolutely love Carys, it’s one of my favourite names, as is Cerys.

pumpkinpie01 · 10/06/2020 07:19

Definitely Carys it's lovely

Noideaatall2020 · 10/06/2020 07:29

I think both are lovely names. I'd probably go with Carys.
We had Alexandra on our list but as we didn't like the nicknames Lexi and Sandy so we didn't use it.

mrs87 · 10/06/2020 07:47

Another vote for Carys - how pretty!

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 10/06/2020 07:57

Both are great!

iwilltaketwoplease · 10/06/2020 08:22

I love Carys!

Marlena1 · 10/06/2020 08:26

Love both but think I would choose Carys. Alexandra is very likely to be shortened.

TenThousandSpoons0 · 10/06/2020 08:41

Thanks for opinions so far, keep them coming :) to add - Alexandra would be shortened to Alex for the first few years at least, while we have some element of control over it!

Both lovely. Alexandra is my favourite of what I'd call the classic girls names, but Carys is unusual and pretty. I would probably choose Carys as I'm not a huge fan of Alex or Lexi.

MamaGothel · 10/06/2020 08:48

I would choose Alexandra

Alwaysundecided · 10/06/2020 08:52

Just saw your last post. Alex is definitely the best of the shortenings although I don't mind Allie. The CEO of the company I work for is a beautiful kick ass Alex and I always think what a great name it is for her.

Redbrownbrick · 10/06/2020 09:03

I like them both but would probably choose Carys - it just seems a bit more "special" to me. When is she due? Best thing really would be to wait till she's here and see what she looks like and how you feel.

Shelby30 · 10/06/2020 09:04

Alexandra is lovely not keen on the other one.

captainraymondholt · 10/06/2020 09:14

Carys is gorgeous.
Carys Alexandra sounds lovely if you are open to using the other as a mn.

OnABeachSomewhere · 10/06/2020 09:26

Alexandra, although I like Carys too.

Or combine them and go for Alys?

CaffiSaliMali · 10/06/2020 09:36

I prefer Carys, it's a bit more unusual but isn't difficult to say or spell. It's a bit like Megan and Owen in that it doesn't feel strange if someone with no Welsh connection uses it. It's not like Esyllt or Buddug or Llyr or Eifion where a child might be asked about their Welsh ancestry a lot and potentially find it annoying.

Alexandra is nice, but I don't like the nicknames as much as the actual name.

Agree with Captain that Carys Alexandra is lovely.

DramaAlpaca · 10/06/2020 13:44

Carys

123Dancewithme · 10/06/2020 15:16

Alexandra

MikeUniformMike · 10/06/2020 16:54

They are quite different. I'd pick Alexandra.

Carys was very popular in the 1960s so I wouldn't use it because of that. It would be like calling her Karen or Linda. I have nothing against any of the names, all are fine.

Whatsyourflava · 10/06/2020 18:02

Definitely prefer Alexandra - great choice!

madcow78 · 10/06/2020 18:07

My first name is very similar to Carys (1 letter difference !), I'm very happy with it but found it annoying growing up that I couldn't have a shortened nickname. I also have a 'J' middle name though so was often called CJ. It has shaped how we name our children, who all have names that can be shortened and also first initials that will work with a 'J' middle!
