Is Noah as popular as stats suggest??

Already have a DS called Reuben and his brother due in July.

I love the name Noah.

Literally know no children called this... Have asked every health visitor, midwife, friend if they know of any and NO one can even think of a baby being called Noah. The midwife at the hospital thought it was really unusual.

Statistically though it's unbelievably popular?! So I'm wondering if its a regional thing? We live on the South Coast.

If it's really popular where you are... Please tell me where you are?!?

@Mammyloveswine One of my friends has a Noah and an Eli.

Noah is reasonably common round here. But I agree it doesn’t matter that much.

The naming situation is a bit different to when I was a kid and parents seemed to choose from a very narrow range of names. My primary school class (of 24/25) had 4 Alans/Allans in it, and 3 Stuarts/Stewarts. We had 2 Jennifers, 2 Gillians and 2 Claires too. You seem to get a wider variety of names these days.

Mammyloveswine · 10/06/2020 11:15

@SporadicNamechange it seems to be a popular combo! Chris Evans two sons are Noah and Eli abs Micheal buble has Noah and Elias!

I know of one. I did used to like the name but for some reason I don’t like it at all now.

LooseyGoosey · 10/06/2020 11:25

I know 3 Noahs under 5, so I'd say reasonably popular. It's a lovely name though, so go for it if you like it!

Some friends have recently named their new baby Noa.

They had to issue a clarification after their birth announcement to make it very clear that their baby is a girl after receiving lots of congratulations on the birth of their son. Confused

Pleasenodont · 10/06/2020 12:46

Yep, it’s been hugely popular for a few years now. My 7 and 9 year old’s both have Noah’s in their classes and my friends 7 year old is called Noah too.

Puppilangstrumpfi · 10/06/2020 12:52

Yes very very popular. The ONS lists are definitely correct.

Ontopofthesunset · 10/06/2020 12:57

I'm in London and I know lots of Noahs ranging from early 20s to just born - the last baby I met was called Noah. But if you like it, use it.

It's not a favourite of mine, as I find the sound very negative and whiny and I can't get past my primary reference with his Ark. It's always funny to me when people say a name is popular for a reason (ie because it's a lovely name). Clive and Nigel were popular for the same reason - people thought they were lovely names.

If you look at the official statistics the numbers of Noah's have been declining each and every year for the past few years. So it could actually be a safer choice rather than choosing a name that's on a massive upswing

I love it, don't know any!

Well, yes, but by fairly small increments. There have been around four thousand Noahs every year since 2014.

2014 4085
2015 4148
2016 4305
2017 4273
2018 4107

Names tend to go down in popularity much slower than they go up unless there's a particular reason why the name becomes less popular, for example as happened with Alexa when it dropped like a stone in 2018.

daisypond · 10/06/2020 14:21

In my area Noah is a name from 20 years ago, like lots of Old Testament boy names. It’s been and gone here. You wouldn’t name a baby it now.

Grufallosfriends · 10/06/2020 16:19

Way overused. Almost a little dated.

TheVanguardSix · 10/06/2020 16:38

Noah is a great name and it's unlikely that your DS will attend school with more than one. It's not like there are 5 in a classroom or even an entire year group! And even if it does turn out to be the case, who cares (still unlikely!).
If you love it, go with it OP. It's a fine, strong, beautiful name.

At present, I know 3 Noahs: 1 in DD's year 5 class, another is my friend's 3 year old, and another is my cousin's infant son back home in the States.

TheVanguardSix · 10/06/2020 16:43

Just to add, and maybe it's the Jewish in me, but old testament names never date! You're always in good hands with an OT or NT name. You might want to give Nebuchadnezzar the swerve though. Grin

If not Noah, how about Etan, Jethro, Yonatan (Yoni), or Saul?

LemonDrizzles · 10/06/2020 17:46

If you like the name, go for it.

It's popular by us. Ds knows 4 or 5 the same age as him

Xigris · 10/06/2020 17:55

I have a ten year old Noah. I don’t know any others personally. I also have a 6 year old called Reuben! Elijah was on my list too but NO MORE BABIES Grin.

Noah is my most favourite boys name ever. DH had literally no choice when it came to naming our Noah (he did get to choose Reuben).

Congratulations

MittensTheSerpent · 10/06/2020 17:56

I know at least two. The popularity of this name completely escapes me! Not a pleasant sound.

Grufallosfriends · 10/06/2020 18:11

I don't like the sound either. Like a whiny No.

Crustaceans · 10/06/2020 19:46

It’s actually more like a Geordie no. That seems to involve 17 ohs and and ah at the end. 😆

Kittymitty38 · 12/06/2020 18:49

Beautiful name. I know 3 age range 1-10 xx

Prettylittlelady · 13/06/2020 07:17

I’m teacher and I think we have one in our large primary. I know of a few friends/acquaintances who have sons with this name all under 5.
