My self and my oh are ttc at the moment.
During the week I was scrolling through a facebook group and seen a post from a woman with the name faela, I struck up a convo with her and asked the origin of her name. She claimed it was irish /Celtic , being irish myself I knew that it wasnt an irish spelling so I looked into it more.
I eventually came across the irish word faoladh, it was a mythical creature from ancient ossory, an old Provence in Ireland where kilkenny its now.
It turns out it was a type of werewolf that was a protector over the young and old.
My self and my oh have fallen in love with the name for a girl but are aware that it is really unusual. What are other peoples thoughts on here?

Nah, not for me. Go for Fay with something like Layla as her middle name. Believe me, she’ll thank you if you give her a normal name.

romdowa · 07/06/2020 17:37

@whatausername yes we would go with the irish spelling. I'm not a fan of english spellings for irish names

I've been saying it aloud and take back my failure comment. I stand by my spelling one though.

whatausername · 07/06/2020 17:38

@romdowa totally! Not everything needs anglicised :-)

SnowdropFox · 07/06/2020 17:41

I like it, go for it! Great that you and your DP are on the same page too.

romdowa · 07/06/2020 17:42

@whatausername that's how I feel too. It's also a name that really grows on you to be honest. We loved it but hated the spelling, so I was so glad to find the correct version and of course a fab history behind the word.

I hate that parents burden children with a band they'll have to always spell

Like Katharine? Or Claire? Or Jayne?

SoupDragon · 07/06/2020 17:47

I'm not a huge fan of "weird" names but I actually like this one.

kenandbarbie · 07/06/2020 18:18

Are you in Ireland or the Uk? I'm in Ireland and I have never heard it and many would struggle to pronounce it.

otterbaby · 07/06/2020 18:21

I think it sounds very pretty!

romdowa · 07/06/2020 18:25

@kenandbarbie we are in the uk and oh is english and has no issues pronouncing it. I think once it has been said once to a person it should be fairly easy to remember, it's just Fay with a "la" at the end. Oh surname is fairly unusual , so they are going to spend their lives spelling that anyway 😅😅

I imagine it sounds good when you say it with an Irish accent.

Otherwise I’m hearing both failure and fella.

Croquemonsieur · 07/06/2020 18:35

Ignore the dimwit Little Englander responses. Some people can’t grasp anything beyond Emma. Having said that, it’s not that nice a legend in Cambrensis, and I agree with a pp that it’s liable to be confused with Féile, which for many of us has connotations of getting drunk aeons since in Thurles and brushing our teeth in cider. @Pinkblueberry

Otherwise I’m hearing both failure and fella.

I'm hearing neither of those in my south London accent.
romdowa · 07/06/2020 19:13

@croquemonsieur I hadn't even thought of the word féile😅😅😅 still doesnt put me off though somehow lol I appreciate everyone's opinion on the name. I had a feeling it was going to be a pure marmite name 🙈🙈

So, are you thinking to name this mythical child
faoladh or Faela ?

Dreamcatcher34 · 07/06/2020 19:24

You’ve both fallen in love with it and it has a nice meaning, so it really doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks. Go for it.

Ploppymoodypants · 07/06/2020 19:26

Oh I love it! It’s unusual, but not ‘made up’ and it sounds pretty. Go for it!

I do love unusual names though. Both my DD’s have unusual but ‘real’ names. Although people always think we made them up.

MadeForThis · 07/06/2020 19:39

Love it.

romdowa · 07/06/2020 19:40

@backforgood we would be going with the traditional irish spelling of faoladh.

It's a no from me!

BeTheHokeyMan · 07/06/2020 19:41

It's beautiful op I love it

stillathing · 07/06/2020 20:17

Op your child will spend their whole life have to spell it for people, tell people how to pronounce it and, worst of all, will never find a pen with her name on in a gift shop

This is me.... But I wouldn't change it! I really love my name (real name, just foreign and unusual).

WinnieWonder · 07/06/2020 20:20

Im Irish too and havent heard of it. It does sound like failure, or fella! Not good

What about Fraoch

tiredandemosh1 · 07/06/2020 20:26

I love it!! my children have unusual Irish names. My youngest in particular has never come across anyone else with his name and he loves it. It's a conversation starter and he doesn't give a shit that he can't find his name on a pen or mug.
