Thoughts on the name Margot? Husband and I like it. We also have a daughter named
Maeve and wondered if they go well together. Also any other suggestions on girls and boys names to go with Maeve?

Thank you

You really love it, don't you @Orphlids Grin

As I've said, the name isn't for me, but I loved reading your passionate description of it, and in many ways I agree with you except for that hard 'g', which I tend to dislike in all names.

Adore the name Margot, would have definitely wanted it if I'd had a girl.

Ingridla · 06/06/2020 17:47

I don't like Margot for non French speakers as I don't like it pronounced Mar-gott. That's how it's pronounced in most European countries.

Carycy · 07/06/2020 08:04

Makes me think of someone fat and frumpy.

I think it’s the oh sound. Sure there’s some research somewhere about sounds in names. Like Bob sounds fat and Tim sounds thin.

Tfoot75 · 07/06/2020 08:17

I only know of 2 little girls under the age of 2 at the moment and both are called Margot, I don't know if this is totally random chance or of its just had a massive surge in popularity! They live within 100yds of each other as well!

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 07/06/2020 08:20

Think it's a lovely name Smile

bridgetreilly · 07/06/2020 08:42

Well, I like Margot. I like it MUCH better than Margaux, which looks ridiculously pretentious to me.

HOWEVER, 'Maeve and Margot' does sound quite twee as a pair and there can be some minor inconveniences from having a matched initial.

redwoodmazza · 07/06/2020 09:04

Margot is a lovely name.

[Why is it when you ask for an opinion on a name, you get loads of alternatives that people seem to think are 'better'???]

I hate it. It is inextricably linked to the vacuous, snobby Margot in The Good Life for me.

Aber9 · 07/06/2020 09:12

I really like it

user495275 · 07/06/2020 09:32

Sorry but it really is horrible. Old fashioned, frumpy, and unattractive both when written down and spoken. I can't understand its vast rise in popularity. And yes I agree it looks like 'maggot'.

Destroyedpeople · 07/06/2020 09:34

It remind if that dreadful faux posh woman in 'the good life' ...Sorry.

aFaintSeashellAroma · 07/06/2020 09:36

Maggot it looks like

Grufallosfriends · 07/06/2020 10:45

Margaux is the more popular spelling in France. It looks so much softer and nicer.

SoupDragon · 07/06/2020 10:48

@Grufallosfriends

Margaux is the more popular spelling in France. It looks so much softer and nicer.
Whereas I think it looks dreadful and "try hard" unless you are French.
Mummytea24 · 07/06/2020 10:53

Margot is a lovely name.

daisypond · 07/06/2020 10:53

I like Margot a lot. I wouldn’t pick another name beginning with M, though.

Adelais · 07/06/2020 20:37

I love it, it’s my dds middle name who was born a few months ago. I didn’t choose it as a first name only down to how popular it’s getting which put me off.

WinnieWonder · 08/06/2020 23:06

Margaux is awful. Margot looks nicer

SatsukiKusakabe · 09/06/2020 20:16

Margot is lovely. Calls to mind the fat frumpy old fashioned and unattractive Margot Robbie. Obviously her name looks a bit like Maggot written down but doesn’t seem to have stopped anyone placing it on movie posters alongside Leonardo DiCaprio’s.

Being facetious but I do like it, even when sported by Penelope Keith in the Good Life and also by Grace Kelly in Dial M for murder.

I think the Margaux spelling would give her a bit of a headache in the U.K. and doesn’t have the simple elegance of the other one.
