Sam/Samuel

DH is really keen on this name for our upcoming DS, and whilst I like the name too, I feel like Sam/Samuel is perhaps a little to wet or weak, and may be too childlike for when he grows up. Do people here agree with me? Cheers, Jennifer

And any suggestions of baby names, leave them on the comment down below we’d like to hear them Smile

I like Samuel but I'm not so keen on Sam but it's pretty inevitable that it will get shortened

I really struggle with boys names some I like are:
Dexter
Archer
Stanley
Toby

Good luck

Love Sam. I really do. It's actually my ex's name and even with our terrible relationship I still like the name. After meeting it actually took me a few minutes to understand his name was actually Sam instead of Samuel which to this day I still find funny.

I wouldn't consider it for my own DC because of that personal reason but it's a lovely name. I also prefer Sam over Samuel. But it's up to you if you go with the long version or stick to just Sam

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 04/06/2020 21:54

I don't like it, but There's nothing wrong with. It's a good name.
Other ideas.
Thomas (Tom)
Benjamin (Ben)
Joseph (Joe)
Christopher (Chris)

PregnantPorcupine · 04/06/2020 22:05

It's a good name, I don't see it as childish or wet at all.

I'd suggest that Benjamin/Ben is along the same lines.

mrwalkensir · 04/06/2020 22:07

good solid name - Sam West for example is a great man

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 04/06/2020 22:09

I love it. It was my choice for DS, but DH and DD outvoted me.

Windyatthebeach · 04/06/2020 22:09

I know a dc Samuel who is a wet lettuce.

Sam is a great name, I've never known a "wet" Sam. All been so manly and strong in my opinion

PlantPotting · 04/06/2020 22:26

I really love this name

BinkyBoinky · 04/06/2020 23:30

It's cute! A nice classic name.

BeMorePacific · 04/06/2020 23:32

I love Sam/Samuel. Great for any age x

123Dancewithme · 04/06/2020 23:45

Definitely not wet or childish! Although I might be biased.

loubieloo4 · 04/06/2020 23:59

We have a Sam, didn't see the point of Samuel as it would be shortened anyway.

He was sammy as a child but back to Sam now he is late teens, still love the name and not that popular

Foxes157 · 05/06/2020 00:53

Ds is Samuel, however chooses to be Sam.

It seems to be less popular. Possibly due to the fact its a parent name.

DramaAlpaca · 05/06/2020 00:58

It's a fine, classic name. I prefer just Sam to Samuel.

Orphlids · 05/06/2020 10:36

I love it. I certainly don’t think of it as a wet name - rather the opposite, in fact. I think of it as quite alpha male, but with a pleasant gentleness. It’ll never go out of style, either.

Thecazelets · 05/06/2020 10:41

Lovely classic name; it was top of our list for our second baby, but she turned out to be a girl!

emilybrontescorsett · 05/06/2020 10:42

Samuel is a classic name.

florascotia2 · 05/06/2020 10:45

Sam/Samuel are fine names. Not weak at all. The Biblical Samuel was a powerful leader.

There is, of course, also Samson, the archetypal strong man... though Samuel was much wiser.

FairfaxAikman · 05/06/2020 10:50

A used to remind me of Sam Tyler and now it's Fireman Sam.
Ds is such a fan of the latter I'm sure he'd push for it if he ever has a brother and tbh I don't hate it!

emmathedilemma · 05/06/2020 11:26

I really like it too and definitely don't see as a childish name.

Jennifer02041993 · 05/06/2020 15:09

Alright, seems like my interpretation of the name has been debunked, and it seems like it’s actually a strong name. The only other issue I have is I know it can be a girls name - but then I don’t really know whether Sam is more overwhelmingly a boys or girls name nowadays (Samuel or Samantha as full)

daisypond · 05/06/2020 15:11

I think it’s a rather strong name. I prefer Sam to Samuel.
I would assume a Sam is male nowadays, because Samantha is perhaps less common.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 05/06/2020 15:13

My DS is Samuel-nn Sam.

He is a big strapping rugby player-
I have never heard any association with the name being wet at all.

We picked it for being strong, classic and straightforward.
No regrets.

SBAM · 05/06/2020 15:23

I like Samuel/Sammy/Sam - one of those names that could be a toddler, a pensioner or anywhere in between and not be out of place
