DH and I are considering this name, however we are certainly unaware of how popular or unpopular it is at the moment. We don't really know a lot of babies or kids as we just moved to a different city a few months ago so haven't exactly made a lot of friends with kids.

Have you recently met any babies/kids named Callum? How popular is it now?

Other names we like:

Fraser
Clive
Rogan
Gareth
Brogan
Boyd

And a few others...

I'm in Scotland and I'd say it's a pretty steady name here. I know 4 adult Callums, 2 kids and one toddler.

curtainsforme · 04/06/2020 14:26

Same. I am in Scotland and I know more adult Callum's than children. 2 in their 30's, 3 in their 20's and a 5 year old.

emmathedilemma · 04/06/2020 14:26

Also Scotland and i think it's fairly common across a range of age groups. Likewise Fraser. I only know one Boyd and he's older (50's), don't know anyone with your other names.

Paperstraw · 04/06/2020 14:32

I guess we don't mind the adult Callums as much as we'd mind the babies or toddlers.

Any opinions on the other names? We are trying to stay out of the most common names without falling into the completely out there ones.

I only know of one, also Scotland

Nquartz · 04/06/2020 14:37

But I'm not in Scotland

Nellydean21 · 04/06/2020 14:38

Very popular in Ireland too. Lovely name.

BabloHoney · 04/06/2020 14:39

I really like Callum (and Calum) - bit different without being too out there. It was on our list for our second baby, but we went with Conor in the end. I also love Fraser from your list!

daisypond · 04/06/2020 14:39

I don’t know any young Calums. I would spell in with one N naturally.

SporadicNamechange · 04/06/2020 14:43

I love Calum too. I’d spell it with one L too.

SnowdropFox · 04/06/2020 14:56

Where are you based op? Maybe worth looking at the previous few years records to help judge.

Callum is my favourite from your list. Rogan my least favourite.

Alwaysundecided · 04/06/2020 15:05

Callum is the 135th most popular name in England and Wales, so not popular here really. I've certainly never met a baby or small child called Callum. Go to darkgreener.com and type in any name and it will tell you how popular it is.

I have seen it spelt both ways but for some reason the double L spelling looks a bit more appealing to me. We'll definitely give this a thought though!

SnowdropFox
We are based in SW England and I tried checking the statistics from the ONS but it only shows the Top 10 from each region.

Alwaysundecided
Just gave the website a look, that's really helpful. It seems to have gone from 20th to 135th so that's slightly reassuring and the Calum spelling went from 91st to 1040th

Callum is honestly one of the ugliest names I can think of. Reminds me of Golum.

Fraser, on the other hand, is lovely.

Wheresthebiffer2 · 04/06/2020 15:43

Callum and Fraser - pretty normal names in Scotland
I don't know any children named the other choices on your list.

Also consider Conall? or Connal? Connor?

autumnkate · 04/06/2020 16:40

I live in the SW and I’ve never met one. I like it!

BlueGreenYellowRed · 04/06/2020 17:04

It's nice but I think it's a bit of a naughty boy's name. Possibly because it's slightly chavvy.

How about Calvin?

CaffiSaliMali · 04/06/2020 17:07

All the Callums and Calums I know (4) are late 20s, this is in England. I expect there will be a wider age profile in Scotland.

I like Callum and Fraser.

bunnyplops · 04/06/2020 17:16

I don't think it's popular in the uk. In all honesty I can see why. It sounds old and clunky to me and not in trendy old fashioned way I'm afraid Blush I'd put it in the Keith/Trevor/Brian category

bunnyplops · 04/06/2020 17:19

From your list I think Fraser is lovely by the way.

userabcname · 04/06/2020 17:19

I really like it. Don't know any babies or toddlers with this name but do know and few teenagers/ young adults. Definitely the best from your list!

Paperstraw · 04/06/2020 17:24

BlueGreenYellowRed
I think this comment alone completely put me off from using the name. I wouldn't want my child to be considered chavvy in any way.

bunnyplops
Fraser is definitely on the top of our list, we do love how it couldn't easily have a nn and would most likely stay as Fraser the entire time. The show Frasier doesn't fully allow me to commit to it though but I'm hoping it wouldn't be much of a problem in the UK as it would in the US?

helpmum2003 · 04/06/2020 17:33

I like Callum and Fraser from your list, they're lovely. Not keen on the others, sorry.

Callum isn't chavvy round here but Brogan definitely is. Boyd sounds like a surname and Rogan like a curry. Clive is very dated.

I think in the end you have to go for what you like as you'll get so many opinions..

Good luck.

Roseburn · 04/06/2020 18:03

Calum and Fraser intergenerationally standard names where I'm from. Not over popular but not underused either.

SnowdropFox · 04/06/2020 18:03

That's funny people calling it chavvy, it's quite a diverse name in Scotland. I wouldn't label it as chavvy at all! But regions/countries can be very different!
