This has made it to our top two names, but I’m still not convinced I love it enough (although feel that way about every single boy’s name tbh). I think it’s a strong name that’s quite underused and I’ve never met one. I sense it might be a bit marmite.

Thoughts? What does it make you think of? The bible? The OC?

I think of it as a rural/farming community name.
There is one in my dd's yr6 class.
An ok & not commonly used name.

whichteaareyou · 02/06/2020 22:13

I love it. What's your other option for a name?

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 02/06/2020 22:26

I had it on the shortlist but DH strongly vetoed

I think it's a lovely name but I think it is quite marmitey....

Mucklowe · 02/06/2020 22:35

It has a bit of a snaky, sinister feel to it. And all the Seths I've known have been tossers.

EgremontRusset · 02/06/2020 22:38

Love it. But here in leafy west London it would be Seff too, so I think that’s maybe quite widespread in the south not just an east thing.

Rocksandstones · 02/06/2020 22:39

I like it, and it makes me think of the OC

PetuniaPots · 02/06/2020 23:08

I really like the name Seth. Would've been on our list but DH has a slight lisp when he's tired so we had to knock that one on the head 🤣

Seth is underused and sounds strong and handsome to me. I love one syllable names too so tick tick tick ✔️

overandunder9 · 02/06/2020 23:34

Makes me think of the old man from Emmerdale. Sorry.

LadyGAgain · 03/06/2020 00:00

It's ok. Reminds me of that guy from Emmerdale.

What happens if he has a lisp?

Blursula · 03/06/2020 00:10

Thanks all, seems mostly positive but good to get a balanced perspective. I’d not actually thought of the possibility of it being pronounced ‘Seff’.

@DramaAlpaca actually, although I love the name, I can appreciate what you and another pp mean about the snakiness/sound of it.

I went off it for a while when I realised it rhymed with death, but then realised so does Beth, which is a name I love, so figured I was massively overthinking it.

Blursula · 03/06/2020 00:11

@LadyGAgain isn’t that a concern for any name beginning with S? Would be odd to rule out all S names based on that. Perhaps he could use his middle name if so.

OP posts:
LadyGAgain · 03/06/2020 00:13

Perhaps. You asked for opinions.

Blursula · 03/06/2020 00:15

@BalloonSlayer yes tad dark, although better than Cain I suppose!

Our other name is Jonah (@whichteaareyou) so as you can see I’m not put off by biblical associations.

DramaAlpaca · 03/06/2020 00:29

As you've gathered, I don't like Seth - but I really, really like Jonah. No slitheriness there at all Wink Grin

Mish85 · 03/06/2020 00:40

Sorry but unfortunately I really don't like Seth, not that my opinion should mean anything, if you love it you should totally use it! Just don't like the sound and snakey/lisp sound it has, and sounds a little incomplete for some reason. Really like Jonah though, lovely sound.

BalloonSlayer · 03/06/2020 07:45

Oh gosh yes I forgot about Cain. I do know a couple of Cains. Confused

Jonah is a byword for bad luck of course but at least the Biblical Jonah, once he had realised he couldn't get out of the job God had for him, was a good guy.

Pippilangstrumpfie · 03/06/2020 08:07

I strongly dislike the sound of seth. It sounds so soft, lispy and unpleasant. My tongue feels weird saying it.

RachelRosie · 03/06/2020 08:09

My DD would have been a Seth, we were convinced she was a boy and kept talking about meeting Seth. It's a lovely name. Not too popular, but not too unique!

LusciousV · 03/06/2020 08:30

Seth / Seb were top of my list - DH wasn't a fan of either 🙄

captainraymondholt · 03/06/2020 09:44

I love it.

Electrical · 03/06/2020 11:33

I want to like it but it’s a noise, not a name, it’s not even one syllable, sounds unfinished

Electrical · 03/06/2020 11:34

Sssth

MysteriesOfTheOrganism · 03/06/2020 11:45

Seth is the sexy hunk who wants to be a movie star in Cold Comfort Farm. Smile Great name!

Cindie943811A · 03/06/2020 14:38

Personally I somehow find it hard to pronounce and I don’t have a speech impediment , Try saying it several times quickly.
I know someone with a DS called Heath Seth so maybe zHeath might appeal?
Silas?

Whatsyourflava · 03/06/2020 14:43

Love the name Seth. One of my favourites
Hadn't thought about it rhyming with Beth @Blursula but have always loved the name Beth too
