I made a previous thread on the name Carlota, which we are still keeping as one of our top choices. However I was just recently talking to my parents and remembered this name! I was actually supposed to be named this but eventually my parents changed their mind. I've always loved it and forever wish they had chosen this instead of my actual name.

Pronounced as Mahr-ee-ah Hoh-seh (this is my best attempt at writing its possible pronunciation)

And funnily enough José Maria is the male version of this name.

Is it way too Spanish sounding? Could someone possibly survive in the UK with it?

Well yes honestly it's alot spanish sounding but that's not a bad thing. It's a good name. If it was up to me i would definitely go with Maria Jose.

123Dancewithme · 02/06/2020 21:25

I prefer Carlota.

MrsLully · 02/06/2020 21:40

Spaniard here. I've never like that name, sorry Confused Everybody I used to know named María José ended up being called Marijose or Makoque, or Pepa or Mari or something equally weird Grin
Of course it you like it just go for it!
I gave my DD a name that I though was reasonable but apparently it's s town twister and I've scarred her for life, so what do I know!

MrsLully · 02/06/2020 21:40

Tong twister. FFS!

StrawberryPi · 02/06/2020 21:50

I doubt people will end up using the full name as it is a bit of a mouthful. Pepa is a traditional nickname for it though which I think super cute! Definitely Spanish though, and a bit weird if that isn't your background.

JuneJuly · 02/06/2020 22:13

Yeh, full on Spanish isn't it really? In my head I hear it said with a spanish accent.

CaffiSaliMali · 03/06/2020 08:28

I like it, I imagine in the UK people will mostly just use Maria.

I love Carlota.

Nothing wrong with reflecting your child's Spanish ancestry in their name.

Kokeshi123 · 03/06/2020 11:13

Maria is a lovely name. Maria Jose is perfectly nice in itself, but there is no way she will be called the full version for very long in the UK. Even "British" hyphenated names (Lily-Grace etc.) usually wind up as just "Lily" before long.

If people do use the full version----I think most British people will probably know that Jose is pronounced something like "hosay" but you can't expect Maria to be pronounced like someone would say it when speaking Spanish. It will be "muh-REE-uh" here.

devildeepbluesea · 03/06/2020 11:15

I know of a Maria José and would know how to pronounce this
She is Spanish though.

TooGood2BeTrue · 03/06/2020 11:22

I would drop the José for sure because people with no or little knowledge of Spanish will mispronounce the J in José constantly (as "Dschozeh" or "Hoseh", which is both incorrect). I prefer Carlotta to Carlota. What about
Carina
Cara
Valentina
Marina
Gabriella
Marya?
