Afternoon! Hope the sun is shining wherever you are ☀️ I am considering using Drew for either DD or DS. What are your thoughts on the name on a boy and girl? Thanks x

My childminders daughter is Drew, early 20's, she's sassy, intelligent and bloody stunning and because of that I associate those attributes to the name. It's lovely for a girl, not so much for a boy

NeighbourPooNameChange · 03/06/2020 00:02

Lovely name. Especially for a boy

NeighbourPooNameChange · 03/06/2020 00:03

Same missingmum Smile Except I know a lovely boy who’s a Drew! All round great name OP!

My advice is do not turn to strangers on the internet for approval on your child's first name.

Do not even turn to friends and family.

If you and your partner are happy with Drew, go for Drew.

The only thing I think you should consider is how it matches with their surname. Would it sound awkward? Could kids make fun of, or change it once they start school.? Eg Dick Richard could easily be changed to Dick Dick, or Double Dick, or 2 Dicks, etc. Children can be both creative and cruel in equal measure.

I speak as someone who actually won money as a child from a comic for sending them a list of a my "nicknames". The most creative being Elz Potato Kardapoopoo.

It is a bit American sounding, not that that’s a bad thing! I never came across one whilst living in the U.K. but I know quite a lot from living in the US, including a woman from work in her early 20s. And there’s the property brothers guy. That said I do really like it.

DramaAlpaca · 03/06/2020 01:00

I like it for a boy but not for a girl.

Nsky · 03/06/2020 01:09

PetuniaPots · 03/06/2020 09:29

Thank you guys, that's helpful. Yes, ZIll, it's a meaningful name as well as liking it so I don't think I'll change my mind on it, just very interested to hear the feedback ☺️

I have a 3yo family member named Drew. He is just the sweetest little fellow. Initially I thought it was quite a grown-up name to give a baby but it's grown on me.

He is also just Drew, not Andrew.

Aclh13 · 04/06/2020 00:06

I always thought drew was quite a classy name, I knew two kids from my school who were called drew with very wealthy families and were abit hoo rah x

SingingSands · 04/06/2020 00:09

I went to uni with a guy called Drew, he was so lovely. My DD has a female friend called Drew and she's a lovely, fun girl, so I associate the name lovely, happy people Smile

I like it. It's a bit different, but easily pronounced and easy to spell.

PetuniaPots · 04/06/2020 09:53

So so lovely to hear your happy associations. I always find a name easier to envisage when I hear things like this. Thank you x

I love the name!

babynamelover · 04/06/2020 10:10

My first boyfriend was Drew, short for Andrew though I feel it's a bit limiting on its own.
I'm not a fan for a girl but I really don't like unisex or boys names on girls ie Riley, Morgan etc.

Mmsnet101 · 04/06/2020 10:17

I don't believe in the old fashioned views of full names being on birth certificates even if the child is never to be known as the 'full name'. Our DD has a similar 'shortened name' and when pregnant I was told we'd get a lot of people confused by it etc, nobody has questioned it since she arrived.

I like Drew for boy or girl. I've known a few Drews, mainly Andrews who've chosen it as a nicer/less common shorter than Andy but one or two who have it as their full name. Think it's a bit more common in Scotland.

PetuniaPots · 04/06/2020 13:43

Thanks @Mmsnet101 that's really helpful. I think we've moved away from the full name concept too. Much appreciated thank you x
