'Abel' for a boy

My DH suggested this the other night and it really threw me. I don't really know how I feel about it other than it's made me pause to think. We would call him Abe for short. As an aside we are completely and utterly screwed if we have a boy on the names front- we've been through over a 1,000 and haven't found a single one that's jumped out at us. Middle name will be John as it's a family name. Thoughts welcome, but please be kind in general, cause, well, there's no need for rudeness is there? X

I quite like it. There was a baby called Abel on the postnatal ward when I had Dd1 4 years ago, and more recently a friend has a nephew called Abel

CathyorClaire · 31/05/2020 21:22

Murder victim and creepy kid from Sons of Anarchy.

It's a no from me. Sorry.

123Dancewithme · 31/05/2020 22:23

I really like it!

gigi556 · 31/05/2020 22:24

It was my grandfathers name. I do think of Cain and Abel, but I love it.

Orphlids · 31/05/2020 22:41

I think the name itself is very nice. A lovely gentle, yet masculine sound. Unfortunately, for me, the biblical association is just too strong. However, there are loads of kids called Cain now, and that’s far worse, given that he was actually the murderer.

Kezmum14 · 31/05/2020 22:55

We have an Abel, he is 5 and loves his name. (Insists I’m being called Abel not Abe or Bubble (the pronunciation his brother uses 🙈) we love his name too 🥰

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 31/05/2020 22:58

Kez my friend's little boy is Abel & has been Bubble from the off thanks to his big sister Grin. I like it op.

Albern · 31/05/2020 23:02

I like it alot

theseriousmoonlight · 31/05/2020 23:09

Great name. I associate it more with a lovely lad I teach than the Bible and I'm Catholic.

Lizadork · 01/06/2020 16:12

Sons of Anarchy first introduced me to this name and whilst I wasn't keen at first, I have grown to really love Abel.

Bertyb7 · 01/06/2020 20:06

Love it

Ellmau · 01/06/2020 23:42

You could also use Abe for an Abraham or Abram.

Ylostigres · 02/06/2020 00:07

Oooh! I really like it. Actually think it's gorgeous.

popsydoodle4444 · 02/06/2020 00:28

Is he a sons of anarchy fan?

Kokeshi123 · 02/06/2020 01:48

I know the story and I still think the name is fine.

user3274826 · 02/06/2020 01:55

I like it. Haven't heard anyone else use it (yet). If you check Dark Greener names, it looks like it's rising in popularity, but still too early to tell if it will keep rising. It's at the same point Noah was in about 2000, I worked in childcare back then and I remember lots of people said that was too biblical and out there then, and look what happened. Also consider Avery, such a lovely underused boys name.

Bluewater1 · 02/06/2020 01:58

No

Bumblebee413 · 03/06/2020 23:37

No, we've never seen 'Sons of Anarchy'. I'm quite pleasantly surprised by how many positive responses there are. Still no idea what we would pick, but nice to see that it might be an option if needs be. Thank you all for your honesty and responses, positive and negative x

Abel is my boy's name if I ever have a ds. I love it.

MikeUniformMike · 04/06/2020 19:37

Depends on the surname.

I don't really get the trend for OT names. I knew someone elderly with the name when I was young, and don't have anything against it.
I am not English so would say it AB-el not Able.

monkeyonthetable · 04/06/2020 19:39

I love it. Also love Abe.

Edenember · 05/06/2020 10:47

@Bumblebee413 I love the look and sound of Abel (I seem to solely like biblical boys for some reason) , but I do think of the word able. Not that that’s a particularly negative thing? I’ve also heard Eben today which I like.

whatausername · 06/06/2020 17:38

It's alright, I dislike Abe though. It's a mere two syllables, it doesn't have to be shortened. I do think of the Hannibal character, Abel Gideon, who gouges the nurse and gets all chopped up later. The show is great so bound to be pop up now and then but I doubt many will make the association.

Cheeseycheeseycheesecheese · 06/06/2020 17:40

I think it's nice. My cousins 2nd child is Abel and we call him Abe.

ShredMeJillianIWantToBeNatalie · 06/06/2020 17:43

I love Abe. But not Abel. If you have another boy I’d be worried people would think it’s funny to say what’s your brother’s name, is it Cain? Would you consider using just Abe?
