Our shortlist is now down to:

Eliza
Camille
Isabelle/Isobel
Amelia
Camilla
Penelope
Primrose

Id love to know peoples options, a couple of these we like but are so popular we're trying to find pretty names not in the top 20.

Any other similar suggestions also appreciated

userabcname · 31/05/2020 14:05

I love Penelope and Isabelle.
Not a fan of Amelia.
Don't mind the rest.

123Dancewithme · 31/05/2020 14:25

Camilla or Camille. Penelope is nice too.

CorianderLord · 31/05/2020 14:26

Like them all except Eliza

Pleasenodont · 31/05/2020 14:37

I like Camille and Penelope, the others are a bit too common.

Pemba · 31/05/2020 17:11

A nice list. I like them all except Penelope and Primrose, although they're not awful. Primrose is just a bit prissy and also slightly childlike, just 'Rose' much better. Penelope seems to be getting popular, but I've never really liked it that much. It still has a bit of a 'jolly hockey sticks' vibe to me (posh girl at boarding school, mid 20th century). The short form 'Penny' is OK I suppose. 'Nell' is lovely, but I would rather get that from Helen/Helena/Eleanor than Penelope.

TBH, my favourite is 'Isobel' (not the frilly spelling) but it has been sooo popular for years, that might be a disadvantage?

PenfoldsFive · 31/05/2020 17:13

Oh, I love both Eliza and Camille. Any chance of twins, OP? Smile

Coffeeandcake1 · 31/05/2020 17:42

Im loving all the opinions and suggestions, thanks everyone.

@PenfoldsFive Eliza and Camille would make great twin girl names but Ive definitely only seen the one in there on the scans! Grin( this is now my secret back up in case scans are wrong!)

We're now leaning away from the really popular options (Amelia or Isobel) as I'd like her not be one of 2 or 3 in her class.

Amelia and Isabelle are everywhere so I'd avoid those. I personally don't like Primrose but your other choices are all lovely.

17caterpillars1mouse · 31/05/2020 20:53

Eliza - beautiful name, quite classic. She would come across other Eliza's in life, but not all the time

Camille - I really like it, it's beautiful, has history, is known but uncommon and Cami and Milly are both lovely nn

Isabelle/Isobel - dds middle name is Isobel so I obviously love it. I discarded it as a first name due to popularity though. I do know alot of them. Isabella spelling is too frilly for me, Isobel feels stronger, more fiesty

Amelia - overly popular and not particularly pretty to my ears. I prefer Amelie

Camilla - OK, much prefer Camille

Penelope - not a fan

Primrose - lovely. I've met two, both under 3. I like both Prim and Roset as nn

daisypond · 31/05/2020 21:01

Camilla is my favourite. It’s lots better than Camille. I like Penelope and Isobel and Primrose. Eliza is OK, but Elizabeth is better. Amelia is OK too.

Krazynights34 · 31/05/2020 21:06

Camille, Eliza and Penelope are my favourites!

Other names you might like..
Carmen
Caroline
Cara
Julia
Edie
Ida
Aster
Helene
Beatrice
Rosalind

Camille and Penelope.

I love Camille and, while it should be Camilla in English and that name is lovely, it has too strong an association with PB for now, I think. It would be more like Ca-ME in French. No-one is going to say Kamil. They're either going to say Ca-meel (as I guess you'd want) or Ca-mee. Cami is a nice nn.

Penelope is of such a different era to your others and due a revival. The risk is that it could become a bit, or very fashionable, soon. Could be the next (niche) Marnie, or the next Amelia.

To me, Eliza sounds very 'old-fashioned American rural', like something out of the Waltons, or Little House on the Prairie. Makes me think of 'there's a hole in my bucket, dear Liza, dear Liza...'

missmouse101 · 31/05/2020 21:36

Camilla is nice. The rest are unappealing, especially Amelia (with its ugly mealy sound. Uh-mealy-uh.)

lottiegarbanzo · 31/05/2020 21:37

I wonder if you'd like Mirabel or Christabel?

I like the idea of Primrose but find it a bit twee and a bit like Honeysuckle or Bluebell in being a 'statement flower name' that's more flower than human name. Also 'Prim Rose' given Rose is such a lovely, popular name. How about any variations on Rose?

Also, my own feeling (and I appreciate it may just be mine) is that seasonal flower names should be given in the right season. If you're preg now she's not going to be born in early spring. Maybe look up plants flowering in the relevant month, or flower fairies of that season.

LouLouLoo · 31/05/2020 21:46

I really like both Eliza and Camille.

Not keen on the rest and Primrose I really don't like.

35andThriving · 31/05/2020 21:47

I like Eliza.

Chicchicchicchiclana · 31/05/2020 21:49

Primrose is gorgeous!

I also like Camille and Penelope from your list.

pinkpinecone · 01/06/2020 11:23

I like Isobel and Eliza best from your list.

How would you pronounce Camille, is it Cam-e Cam-eel? I could see that being an issue.

RickOShay · 01/06/2020 11:28

Really like Camille and Primrose. For some reason I’m not keen on Eliza.
Love the suggestion of Mirabel and Christobel.
Also thought of Meriel.

DoctorBambino · 01/06/2020 11:37

Eliza - quite like it, underused but well known
Camille - dont like it, too posh for me
Isabelle/Isobel - like it, prefer isabelle spelling
Amelia - like it but seems popular
Camilla - no no no
Penelope - not keen myself but other people seem to like it
Primrose - not my taste
