Special family member called Donna, what alternatives would you suggest for DD?

OP posts:

Belladonna?

Donna means 'lady' iirc, are there any names with the same meaning you like?

But why not just use Donna?

Onekidnoclue · 28/05/2020 11:13

Ah! Thanks for the explanation. Grin
I’m afraid I’m one of those who thinks either go for it or not. Don’t have a shower with your clothes on!
But your child and your way of honouring someone. What I think is irrelevant!
Perhaps as a middle name? I can’t really tell if you like the name or not from your posts!

missmouse101 · 28/05/2020 11:26

Donetta?

Branleuse · 28/05/2020 11:33

Donna is a lovely name. Due a comeback

MikeUniformMike · 28/05/2020 11:51

Dona - welsh saint, pronounced the same. I think Donna is fine.

LunaNorth · 28/05/2020 11:54

Ella? Same meaning.

helpmum2003 · 28/05/2020 11:54

I would use as a middle name if you don't like it enough to use as a first name.

Blursula · 28/05/2020 12:18

I agree with @Piggyhoolier - if it’s a different name you’re not really honouring them.

Donna is lovely and very unusual these days.

hannahfaith · 28/05/2020 17:03

It seems I'm in the minority here but I think you're okay to honour someone with a similar name
Donna means "woman", other names with the same meaning are:
Norah
Madelyn/Madeleine
Genevieve
Lydia
Freya
Similar sounding names:
Diana
Diona
Dodie

L777 · 28/05/2020 17:23

Shish?

bridgetreilly · 28/05/2020 20:34

Donna.

Giving someone a name that isn't your special family member's name is a really, really weird way to 'honour' that person.

DoAsYouWouldBeMumBy · 28/05/2020 20:47

I think Donna is lovely, as well as being usual now.

Good GOD don't call her Belladonna after a poisonous plant!!!

finallychangedmyusername · 29/05/2020 16:46

Freya, Martha, Sarah and Nerys have similar meanings, if that helps?

helpwithpuppyplease · 29/05/2020 22:04

*If you’re picking an alternative, you’re not using it.

You don’t have to name your child after someone if you don’t like the name.

Use it as a middle name if you feel you can’t get out of it.*

This ^

HailHydra · 29/05/2020 22:06

Literally anything? It's awful. But use as a middle name if it's an honour name.

Namechange8471 · 29/05/2020 22:08

I agree with pp , use the proper name or don’t bother.

wowfudge · 29/05/2020 22:09

Ella means 'she', not woman.

ZiggZagg · 29/05/2020 22:09

My name is Donna. I love it. At least there won't be seven in her class Wink

tinytemper66 · 29/05/2020 22:10

Dena

Thisismytimetoshine · 29/05/2020 22:11

Every name is an alternative to Donna, op Grin. Pure lunacy to want to call your dd after someone called Donna, but use a different name because you don't like Donna 🤦‍♀️

Scissor · 29/05/2020 22:14

Just go for Donna ..fabulous name

Ellmau · 30/05/2020 20:16

Donata

Marcipex · 30/05/2020 22:37

Use Donna. It’s not to my taste but it’s okay.
I hear much worse suggested on here - Ada, Mabel.
You can’t honour someone by calling the baby a different name.

user1493494961 · 30/05/2020 23:01

What's the point of using a different name?

villamariavintrapp · 30/05/2020 23:31

Yeh there's no point in naming someone after Donna but not using Donna. But you could use her middle name? Surname etc? Address? Some link to a memory you share? Etc I guess? Especially if you use it as a middle name, then it doesn't really matter..
