Alternative to very girly girls’ names?

Hello, here are the names I like so far:
Honor
Rose
Eve
Eliza
Frances/Frankie
Tamsen
Camille
Stella
Indigo

So still feminine but not too frilly. Any thoughts on the above or suggestions for other names? Thanks

Of your list my favourites are Tamsen (would spell it Tamsin), Indigo and Rose.

I don’t understand the definition of a very girly girl’s name tbh.Confused

The suggestions so far are all nice names that are perfectly ordinary girl’s names, as far as I’m aware. What makes them “not girly”?

TempsPerdu · 25/05/2020 08:53

Honor is brilliant - was a strong contender for DD. I also really like Camille. Indigo is nice but a bit hippyish so I think I’d only use it as a middle name.

Other ideas in a similar vein (I’m really not a fan of girly names myself, so lots of these were on our list for DD)

Vita
Merryn
Frida
Greta
Clover
Robyn
Rowan
Cleo
Sylvia
Delphine (similar vibe to Camille)
Hazel

I think it’s a reaction to the two naming trends that have recently been quite prevalent - ‘cutesy’ diminutive girls’ names like Ellie/Millie/Betsy/Tilly/Elsie (often double barrelled with something else) and longer princessy names like Isabella, Arabella, Sophia, Aurora, Arianna and so on.

When I was teaching recently maybe 70 percent of the girls in each class had names that would fall into one of those two groups. Now I think the trend is moving towards more solid, substantial, less ‘pretty’ names.

Oh wow, thanks everyone for your replies, I started the link then fell asleep! Yes, I suppose many of them are quite girly but I think I’m drawn to less frilly girly names, just as TempsPerdu said (I’m also a teacher so think I’m looking for something a bit different to the girls I teach...)

Thanks so much for the suggestions and comments, I love loads of them!

As I often say on here, I think names that end in an ee or uh sound, feel more girly than those with a definite ending. I'm also a teacher, as is DH, so we each felt there were names that we always came across as well as those we wanted to avoid. How about...

Abigail
Adelaide
Beatrice
Charlotte
Ellen
Eloise
Florence
Frances
Harriet
Hazel
Imogen
Iris
Lauren
Madeleine
Meredith
Miriam
Olive
Rachel
Robyn
Ruth
