I love this name, I am not Welsh though(sorry if it's a Welsh thing)

Is it pronounced Rod-ree?

Oh this is one of my favourite names! I love it! There is on on Homes under the Hammer I think!

PuntoEBasta · 22/05/2020 21:37

Is it pronounced Rod-ree?

Not quite. Rh is a distinct letter in the Welsh alphabet and sounds subtly different to R. It’s difficult to explain (for me at least, although there are lots of knowledgeable welsh-speaking MNers who frequent this board) but you might find an example on YouTube.

Midnightdream · 22/05/2020 22:18

Is it Rhod-ree? Very similar to road lol? I've been trying to search it now Blush

The "Ro" bit is said with a bit of an exhale at the same time.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 22/05/2020 22:21

Doesn't rhyme with road.

Like fishing Rod. But R-exhale-odd

CuppaZa · 22/05/2020 22:24

I like it, and I’m particular with names

Midnightdream · 22/05/2020 22:29

@BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz I think I finally understand. R odd ree? I'm missing out the H when I say it. Hopefully its right Hmm

If you can't easily pronounce it, and it doesn't naturally flow from your mouth in your accent, I think it might be best to avoid it. You don't want to have to pause for half a second every time you say your child's name.

DramaAlpaca · 22/05/2020 22:46

I like this name. I've only ever met one, he's half Welsh half Irish.

missmouse101 · 22/05/2020 22:46

Rolled 'r' at the beginning.

TeensArghhhh · 22/05/2020 22:47

It’s pronounced R-H-od - Ree. There is an emphasis on the H. If you can’t pronounce it properly take it off your list

Midnightdream · 22/05/2020 22:48

@ClaudiaWankleman I've never heard the name before. It flows fine I'm confused as there is a couple ways to say the name Sad

mistermagpie · 22/05/2020 22:53

I don't think there are a couple of ways to say it, but it can be hard to pronounce correctly for some people is all. I know a Roderick (Roddy) and you might be on safer ground with that.

Coldbatteredpuddings · 22/05/2020 22:53

I love it, wanted to call my eldest ds Rhodri but I live in England and didn't want to cause him trouble with an unusual name. This was 14 years ago though, it's a bit more of a known name now.

Midnightdream · 22/05/2020 22:54

@TeensArghhhh I think I've got it! Thank you Grin

There is only one way to pronounce Rhodri. Why would you want to name a child a name you cannot pronounce properly?

Midnightdream · 22/05/2020 23:11

I'm saying Rod ree. Then I see R h odd ree. So I'm slightly confused on how you pronouce it.

7 years later I'm correcting people on DS nameHmm

Not Welsh either but I think it’s lovely.

This ^

Just why ? Confused

ClaudiaWankleman · 22/05/2020 23:24

7 years later I'm correcting people on DS name Is Rhodri your son's name OP? How can you correct people if you don't know how to pronouce it yourself?

Smellbellina · 22/05/2020 23:27

I have a very normal name that everyone knows but the actual pronunciation still changes according to people’s accents etc.
So, say it was Emily I’d get
Em-I-lee
Em-A-lee
Em-ER-lee
M-lee
Etc.
I don’t think the fact you/lots of people can’t pronounce the name with a perfect pronounciation (especially a Welsh rolling R!) is a reason not to use it, I think most people would be able to get the right jist Rhodri, as with most names.

ExCwmbranDweller · 22/05/2020 23:32

Have you ever seen Rhod Gilbert on TV? It's how he pronounces the Rhod with a short 'ri' on the end. Of course we call ours Rodders short for Dave but you have to be old enough to appreciate the joke.

Carouselfish · 22/05/2020 23:32

Why use a name you can't immediately pronounce? Well, you just learn to pronounce it. And then, presto, you can use it. Must be hard if you're incapable of doing anything you weren't born knowing how to do.

It's an interesting name op. Not bad.

Mumoftwoyoungkids · 22/05/2020 23:35

I’ve just asked (Welsh) dh how to pronounce it - it is a very different sound to Rod-Rees. And I can’t say it! I’ve just spent 5 minutes trying.

You may have a better ear for languages than me but I’d think twice about using a name that you can’t pronounce correctly.

Midnightdream · 22/05/2020 23:37

@ClaudiaWankleman No DS is not called Rhodri.

@Smellbellina I think it's because I have never heard it out loud hence the confusion.
