Not for me personally as I just generally don't like the name Sam. I think it's a bit boring. But if you like that name that's all that matters.

elfran · 22/05/2020 09:00

I love Sam but prefer the classic Samuel. Samson seems a bit trendy/surname-y.

Ineedanewusername · 22/05/2020 09:02

Reminds me of emmerdale.

BubblesBuddy · 22/05/2020 09:04

Obviously Biblical and is a “strong” name. It’s always associated with Delilah too. I think I prefer Samuel.

Orphlids · 22/05/2020 09:36

There is a little Samson at the toddler group I go to. I’m afraid every time I hear his name, I think it’s faintly ridiculous. I think it’s so closely associated with the biblical story, that if you ended up with a scrawny Samson, it would seem especially silly to some people.

Stillfunny · 22/05/2020 09:39

What about Saul or Solomon.?

ClaudiaWankleman · 22/05/2020 09:40

It makes me think of the Britain's Got Talent contestant many moons ago.

I definitely don't dislike Sam, but prefer Samuel to Samson.

MrsJoshNavidi · 22/05/2020 09:40

I agree with PP. If he turns out to be small and skinny, it will sound ridiculous.

For the same reason, I'd always avoid any virtue names such as Serena, Patience etc, or a name like Bianca.

timetest · 22/05/2020 09:42

No. I did know a Tarzan, he called himself Tom. He really suffered for his name throughout school. A Samson might suffer the same fate.

Flappingflamingo · 22/05/2020 09:43

I have a Samuel, it's so much nicer

MikeUniformMike · 22/05/2020 09:43

It is a first name, but Samuel is nicer.

SnowdropFox · 22/05/2020 09:57

I like Samson, equally to Samuel.

Personally I'm not sure about 'son names. Just because they suggest naming after the father. Sam's son, Harris' son etc.

TheVanguardSix · 22/05/2020 10:09

I do prefer Samuel to Samson (whose story is a bit full-on).

123Dancewithme · 22/05/2020 10:29

I much prefer Samuel.

Ellmau · 22/05/2020 10:35

I rather like it. And you can always shorten to Sam if he turns out a bit weedy ;)

beautifulmonument · 22/05/2020 10:41

First thought: Samsung

Other than that it's ok I guess

user1493494961 · 22/05/2020 11:01

Samuel is lovely, Samson isn't.

17caterpillars1mouse · 26/05/2020 21:04

Love it, though I wouldn't shorten it. It was on our shortlist, but we had girls.

When we looked round preschools last year there was a Samson in the class, and I've also heard it on a child in co-op (though they may have been the same child)

Linny88 · 26/05/2020 21:22

I love it. If It wasn’t so religious I would have chosen it. I don’t like the name Samuel at all, but think Samson is great...also love the Regina Spektor song

june2007 · 26/05/2020 21:25

Yes I like,

Edenember · 26/05/2020 21:28

I like it, definitely makes me think of the Dingles but that association isn’t off putting to me. I prefer the sound of it to Samuel, and you have leeway with the Sam shortening.

Quizeerascal · 26/05/2020 22:26

I actually like the sound/look of it but I'm a christian and the Bible story puts me off. Samuel is a much nicer name imo and has a better Bible story to go with it.
