Any thoughts on this unusual Scottish form of Edgar? For a boy.

Makes me think of:

  1. Johnny Adair, the NI loyalist...not a role model whatever way you look at it.
  2. Adare the place in Ireland.

Will that resonate with people outside Ireland though? Doubt it. Putting those associations to one side though I think it's ok. I don't think it's great but I don't hate it either.

boysnamesaretricky · 22/05/2020 00:02

Thanks, that's interesting. We don't have any Irish connection. Any other thoughts welcome!

The village in Ireland called Adare is very nice, if that helps!

Adair's OK. Way better than Edgar anyway.

adelaya · 22/05/2020 00:06

Red Adair who helped extinguish Piper Alpha
Or Jonny Adair also known as Mad Dog

downtheplug · 22/05/2020 00:07

I know a ten year old called Adair.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 22/05/2020 00:08

Red Adair is the first thing I thought of.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 22/05/2020 00:21

I'd probably assume he was known by his surname for some reason. I don't dislike it, I've just never come across it as a first name.

I think it might depend on your surname. I definitely wouldn't name a boy Adair Cameron (for example) because I think people would get it the wrong way around.

Ihaveamind · 22/05/2020 00:28

I'm Irish and my associations are Adare the (lovely) place and oddly Fred Astaire ☺️
It's a pleasant sound and while there are plenty of Irish people in Scotland he's unlikely to hear "Oh there's a place called that" very often!

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 22/05/2020 00:32

Red Adair was my first thought but didn't know why I knew that name. I must have absorbed the knowledge without realising because I remember Piper Alpha but was at primary school. I think the same has a bit of dash about it, I like it. Cool.

Allmyeye · 22/05/2020 00:36

I thought Red Adair too.

TheCraicDealer · 22/05/2020 01:22

I don't think it's one of those surnames that really works as a first name- I think of Johnny Adair as well, although anyone from NI will probably have that association. If you use a surname-name you have to be careful to use something that isn't too unusual as a first name, otherwise your DS will sound like a firm of solicitors.

What about Dawson? It's underused imo, I really like it. Reid is also ok, we know a little boy called that and he really suits it.

boysnamesaretricky · 22/05/2020 07:37

Interesting, thanks. A bit of a mix so far... Good to know of another young Adair!

yes sounds good..At first glance I read Alasdair
agree with on my using it as a first name is you don't have a surname like James or scott

Our surname is actually used as a first name so that is something to consider. We're hugely struggling with a boy's name... I've known our girl's name for 15 years!

There’s a printing company called Adare so that’s my association - appreciate this won’t be the case for most people though!

BarkandCheese · 22/05/2020 07:51

I’ve never heard it as a first name but I rather like it. Red Adair is my only association, which certainly isn’t negative.

OnlyJudyCanJudgeMe · 22/05/2020 08:05

Brilliantly underused Scottish name!

boysnamesaretricky · 22/05/2020 08:38

It's good to know associations as I think it's so unusual that people will probably associate it with certain things. @OnlyJudyCanJudgeMe thank you! We feel that too.

I thought about Adair Turner of the pensions commission...but I am a weirdo.

Like the name.

123Dancewithme · 22/05/2020 10:21

It is a handsome name. It does make me think of Johnny Adair though.

custodiandiscount · 22/05/2020 10:41

My friend's cousin is Adair, I always heard it as "Dare" before I saw it written down once. Add that to Red Adair and for me, it's a very dashing name. Love it.

Mucklowe · 22/05/2020 10:47

I really like it!

boysnamesaretricky · 22/05/2020 11:22

😊 Glad some people like it.

It’s a common surname in NI, with terrible associations (Johnny Mad Dog Adair as pps have said).
