I don't like either of them sorry. Allegra is a bit trendy (likely to date) and Ophelia is too fancy.

sleepyhead · 21/05/2020 11:55

I think they're both beautiful.

Diorissimo1985 · 21/05/2020 12:03

Prefer Allegra as Ophelia is quite poncy. Also Shakespeare’s Ophelia is a tragic character so I don’t like the connotations.
Have you considered Helena?

saraclara · 21/05/2020 12:04

Ophelia is a nice name, but unfortunately lends itself to immature jokes.

Orphlids · 21/05/2020 12:28

I like them both very much. I’d pick Allegra over Ophelia, as it is more unusual. And yes, “Ophelia tits” has sadly spoiled that name for me.

Puddlesplasher · 21/05/2020 12:35

I like Allegra because I have a lovely friend called Allegra. I don't think of it as a trendy name that will date as my friend is in her forties and the other Allegra I know is mid-thirties!

userabcname · 21/05/2020 12:42

I'm not sure I like Allegra but I do like Ophelia.

Amimissingsomethinghere · 21/05/2020 12:57

@Puddlesplasher does your friend have a nickname? Leggy? Ally?

Amimissingsomethinghere · 21/05/2020 12:58

@Orphlids oh no! I didn't know about this. Okay it's a no go then... Sad

@Amimissingsomethinghere She's mostly Allegra but close friends call her Legs.

monkeyonthetable · 21/05/2020 13:08

Allegra is fine but Ophelia is so linked to the character who commits suicide - I couldn't.

SionnachRua · 21/05/2020 13:13

Love the sound of Allegra.
Ophelia I really couldn't use, it's a bit too flouncy and the character is so tragic.

LondonTowers · 21/05/2020 13:14

Love Ophelia, not keen on Allegra.

Don't think the connotations are that well known or would matter, I love a tragic story anyway. Reclaim the name!

Iamagree · 21/05/2020 13:16

I agree with PP about Allegra - I know a couple of Allegras who are much older, I wasnt at all aware it's "trendy". What about Cordelia?

monkeyonthetable · 21/05/2020 13:24

If you like Allegra because of its meaning, there's also Joy, Joya, Hilary, Freya, Farrah, Letitia.

Happier, luckier Shakespeare heroines: Rosalind, Beatrice, Helena, Emilia, Portia, Viola, Miranda.

Wheresthebiffer2 · 21/05/2020 13:51

I read it as Allergies.

newmum332 · 21/05/2020 13:53

Allegra is lovely, I know an 3yo Allegra, although the family are half Italian. She gets Lel as nn.
Ophelia not personally one I would pick but is a pretty name.

Honeybee85 · 21/05/2020 13:54

I love Ophelia.

Was on my shortlist when I was pregnant.
Very classy and timeless.

GoulashSoup · 21/05/2020 13:57

I like both as names, probably prefer Ophelia, but would be put off by the Ophelia Balls jokes etc...

GoulashSoup · 21/05/2020 13:59

How about Aurelia

17million · 21/05/2020 14:12

I had a gormless Allegr(o) car back in the 70s - so Allegra reminds me of that. Ophelia is not a happy name to be associated with either. But to each their own - your choice.

Ellmau · 21/05/2020 20:33

Allegra is lovely.

LochJessMonster · 21/05/2020 20:34

Awful together.
Maybe Allegra and something else

CrumpetsAndPuzzles · 21/05/2020 20:46

Allergy is beautiful

CrumpetsAndPuzzles · 21/05/2020 20:47

Allegra!!! Stupid autocorrect!
