I have an Astrid, everyone compliments the name

Singingatmidnight · 19/05/2020 18:58

I love Astrid.

I also know a Finish woman called Silva, which is lovely too.

SnowdropFox · 19/05/2020 19:16

Astrid is lovely.

Also Signe, though hard to pronounce.

Sonja
Tuula
Lena

Boys, I always love Jarkko.

No idea how popular they are in real life, just met some of the above while abroad or they are from famous Scandinavians!

midsomermurderess · 19/05/2020 19:19

I rather like Solveig for a girl and Søren for a boy, but for all I know they may be the equivalents of Mavis and Derek.

Brokenchair1 · 19/05/2020 19:22

I'm swedish and currently have friends with girls called Lo, Isabella, Maja, Sofia and Astrid. Boys names - the old ones seem popular now like Valter and Vilmar just off the top off My head. Don't know any Freya's or Thor's currently - probably been very overused!

Brokenchair1 · 19/05/2020 19:24

@midsumermurdress For me Solveig has been an old ladies name eg my parents generation. So like a Mavis or a Vera. However these are now back in fashion in Sweden too so would not be strange to call your child that.

ThanksItHasPockets · 19/05/2020 19:29

If DS has been a girl he would have been Thora Smile

Orphlids · 19/05/2020 19:37

Could someone please tell me, how is Solveig pronounced?

midsomermurderess · 19/05/2020 19:40

'SOHL-vay'. Interesting to hear that Brokenchair. I suppose everything comes around again.

@BabyLlamaZen I love Scandi names. On my list are Eerika (or Erika), Ingrid, and Freyja. Also Alva (or Ylva), Else, Suren, Inge, Anneli, Solveig. For boys, Einar, Eira, Jarle.

Kokeshi123 · 20/05/2020 14:23

That nameberry link nameberry.com/popular_names/Sweden is fascinating because so many of the popular girls names sound similar to popular choices in English speaking countries.

pinkpinecone · 20/05/2020 15:48

Casper/Kasper, Anders, Oskar, Jakob, Malthe, Frederick for boys

Klara, Maja, Mia, Karina, Anja, Runa for girls

These may be a tad Germanic but there's a bit of cross over with naming.

Really dislike Astrid, it's a bit unpleasant sounding to my ear and I can't get over the emphasis of the ass sound

Toilenstripes · 20/05/2020 15:50

Mette for a girl, pronounced metta

Haakon for a boy, pronounced hahkoon

Gonegrey31 · 20/05/2020 15:51

Annika
Birgit
Kristina

Joolsin · 20/05/2020 16:01

I know girls called Hedda, Sanna, Marika, Sofie, Elin (pronounced Ey-leen)

emcero1 · 20/05/2020 16:06

Yes I know a lovely Sanna, it's a really nice name

Roselilly36 · 20/05/2020 16:08

I love Thor said as Tor
