Wildlife inspired names

DH and I are looking for suggestions of names that are wildlife/nature related but something other than the usual Fox, Bear, Sage, Hazel, Savannah, Tiger, etc. They are all beautiful names but we are trying to come up with other options.

There are plenty of words we are familiar with that we'd love to use as names but they're perhaps only familiar to us since we are on the field so our judgment is slightly clouded. Here are a couple of examples of what we are looking into:

Carey - Related to a type of turtle
Pongo - Genus for orangutans

(They'd probably be middle names anyway as we do know we'd want more regular first names). They can be for a boy or girl as we won't know the sex.

Yep, Bambi was a boy. Something my DH only found out last week when it came up in conversation.

Another vote for Fauna.

Penelope is the scientific name for Wigeon

Anas Penelope

Prunella also features in lots of scientific plant names

BalloonSlayer · 18/05/2020 08:44

I didn't know Zorro meant Fox! How fab!

OP if you are going for Pongo as a middle name how about Turdus for the first name? It's the scientific name for Thrush and I think it meets your criteria nicely.

I’ve always liked the name Alexander, after my hero - the great naturalist Alexander Von Humboldt. That might be tamer than what you’re after, though!

Badgerella
Skunkeline
Weasella

'Suggestively sexy for a young woman' Hmm Perhaps OP's DD would like to be more than some sex object in the workplace and other areas of her life? Sexiness at the right time = positive
Sexiness at the wrong time = massive massive negative. She'll be a plaything.

whatausername · 20/05/2020 00:22

Marina
Ocean
Brook(e)
Delta
Bay

It isn't directly wildlife-related but waters are teeming with interesting creatures.

Or something forest, valley or mountain related?

LostInTheColonies · 20/05/2020 00:26

Tarn

Sorrel
Hebe

emptyplinth · 20/05/2020 00:36

Pongo? Hmm
Fox and Bear are bad enough.

Plenty of names translate as an animal name, eg Leo or a pp's suggestion of Kurt.
But they're also actually names.

or how about Wolfgang

Beekeeper1 · 20/05/2020 00:36

@AlCalavicci but was the MNHQ person named after the Greek goddess or the plant? If the former, it's safe to leave Hebe on the list Grin Wink
