Shannon for a boy?

waterandseasalt · 16/05/2020 18:48

I'm 32 weeks, I am really rooting for this name but DP says it's a girl's name! I do get where he's coming from and I feel maybe at this point this name has the same problem as Ashley (also love but DP said it's a no from the start)

I do think Shannon paired up with a "boy" middle name could definitely be pulled off however I can't come up with a decent combination so convincing DP is proving to be very difficult now.

Please help xx

We live in Thailand, we're English though. We're here for the long run which I think allows a whole lot of flexibility with names as we are based in such an international community that people don't really bat an eyelid when they hear names from different origins

I remember a Neighbours storyline where two women had babies at the same time, a boy and a girl, and the first name of both was Shannon. That's all I've got.

MerryDeath · 16/05/2020 19:34

i like it

LotusClover · 16/05/2020 19:46

Not liking common names is fair enough, but there are thousands of better rare names to choose from.

Jane67996 · 16/05/2020 19:48

Just don't do it ..

Haworthia · 16/05/2020 19:48

Don’t do it.

I think of it as a female name, but quite a dated one too.

Summerloving16 · 16/05/2020 19:50

I went to school with a Shannon and he was never ever bullied about her name. His name was his name ! It does make me wonder ... one minute you have a thread about how cruel children are ? Yet adults are posting comments like ‘ unless you want him to get bullied!’ No ones their our some children who are mean etc if they have parents with those views !
It’s a lovely name and like I said Shannon never had a problem with his name as far as anyone was aware x

Summerloving16 · 16/05/2020 19:51

*his name

HelenaPeach · 16/05/2020 19:55

Nah..... terrible name

PowerStruggle · 16/05/2020 19:59

He’s never had any issues with his name. We’re 30 - not sure if it was more common then, but he’s never been bullied for it, and I’ve never found it odd

Ilovecats14 · 16/05/2020 20:04

I only know girls called Shannon so to me it would sound the same as calling a boy a name like Sarah or Michelle or Hannah.

Bluntness100 · 16/05/2020 20:04

No this is too strongly a girls name now, and although you might be in Thailand for the long haul, life throws some curve balls and you’ve no idea where your son will live his adult life.

As such, find a name that most people don’t associate with being a girls name. Else he will be the walking taking version of a boy named sue.

Bluntness100 · 16/05/2020 20:06

We're here for the long run which I think allows a whole lot of flexibility with names as we are based in such an international community that people don't really bat an eyelid when they hear names from different origins

This says to me that for you it’s all about you. It’s not. It’s about your son, and he may choose to live his adult life elsewhere.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 16/05/2020 20:08

It’s a girls’ name to me. I went to school with three Shannons. All of them were horrible and it makes me think of them.

You may live somewhere that wouldn’t bat an eyelid but your DH doesn’t like the name so you have to move on from it. My DH hated my favourite boy name so I had to let it go. We found one we both loved. Needn’t have worried because we’re due DD2 in September.

shootmenow2020 · 16/05/2020 20:09

Shannon Bennett is a famous male chef in Australia so would think of a man if I heard the name Shannon

twinkle2306 · 16/05/2020 20:09

Not at all I'm afraid. We had 3 girl Shannon's in my year at school and one boy. He forever got bullied and resented his parents...

Ashley would be much much better

Elouera · 16/05/2020 20:35

I agree, he wont always live in Thailand in an 'international community'!! He might actually travel and live/work elsewhere, like you obviously have OP!

DidoLamenting · 16/05/2020 21:22

The lead singer of Blind Melon was Shannon Hoon although Shannon was his middle name.

There seem to be several American sportsmen called Shannon.

Malysh · 16/05/2020 21:41

My brother's name is Alexis. Found out when he lived in the UK it's also used for girls there. Didn't bother him too much, he just corrected people's assumptions and/or introduced himself as Alex.

That said I would still think twice before using it. It's not unheard of, using a mostly-female name on boys (I'm thinking Evelyn or Camille). But it's something your child may handle more or less easily, depending on their personality.

In your place I'd probably go for Shane instead. Or Shay, Shawn, etc.

BabyDust13 · 16/05/2020 21:47

I don't mind it there's a famous Australian chef called Shannon Bennett it really suits him

whatausername · 16/05/2020 22:21

It's pretty much become a female name in the UK. To be totally honest all I ever associate with Shannon is Shannon Matthews then a few minutes later I remember the airport.

IA with PP who've said that it's off the table as your DH doesn't like it and that's it about your son, not you. You're coming across as quite selfish on both fronts.

Alexsay · 16/05/2020 22:51

I only know a male Shannon, Aussie. So I'm used to it being a male name, and I only heard of it a few years ago. If you like it, go for it. I've also known a male Kim.

Vellum · 16/05/2020 22:56

It’s awful for either sex. The river is completely surpassed for me by the airport and the world’s most godforsaken business park.

amber763 · 16/05/2020 22:59

It's definitely a girls name

123Dancewithme · 16/05/2020 23:37

I went to school with a male Shannon (in England). I do prefer it for a boy.
