I am French and DH is English . I quite like Mickaël as it is a name in France and one day we could possibly be living in France . However would love to get some opinions from the English on the name .

I like it but names with special characters can be a bit of a pain for form/legal stuff.

I knew a boy called that. His parents were from Portugal. It was often shortening to Mickey. Totally universal name.

Elouera · 15/05/2020 17:53

How are you pronouncing it? Mick-A-el? Like Mikhail Gorbachev?

Cestlavie32 · 15/05/2020 17:55

@Elouera Yep exactly like that Mick A el . Maybe Micka or Micky for short

The one I knew was pronounced like that. I can't remember how it was spelt but no one ever miss- pronouced it to the 'English' way.
I miss little Mickey. His family moved back to Portugal.

alphajuliet123 · 15/05/2020 18:16

How's it pronounced?

My favourite French boys name is Etienne (Stephen) I love it! We also have Loïc, Félix, Louis and Mathis in the French side of the family.

Frankiegoestocornwall · 15/05/2020 19:03

Lovely!

WyfOfBathe · 15/05/2020 19:47

I love it, but DP is French so I'm biased.

ElectricTonight · 15/05/2020 20:32

I love it !

KittenVsBox · 15/05/2020 20:48

The trema can cause problems on uk forms. How upset would you be if it was missed off some documents?
Love the sound of the name, think the spelling could cause problems.

SheWranglesRugRats · 15/05/2020 20:56

It’s pretty dated in France, not very on trend.

Wheresthebiffer2 · 15/05/2020 23:51

I thought Michel was the French version of Michael. ?

Ellmau · 16/05/2020 01:17

I think a lot of English people would think you spelt it wrong, and would spell it wrong themselves as a result.

GunungBatur · 16/05/2020 01:21

The accent won't appear on his UK passport. DS has a French name but it is accentless on there.

GunungBatur · 16/05/2020 01:22

Is it a Breton version of Michel?

Malysh · 17/05/2020 10:24

I thought Michel was the French version of Michael. ?

It is traditionally but Mickaël has been quite popular/trendy for the past couple of decades.

OP, I'm french too and I think it'll work fine in the UK. If they occasionally mess up the trema, meh, who cares. I also like Mikaël.

Malysh · 17/05/2020 10:25

Just make sure the name is written properly on the french passport and ID.

ofwarren · 17/05/2020 10:47

I think it's nice.

Great choice
