Tom???
Read an article on a males perspective on their name and it has made me totally rethink what names to give a boy. I've not stopped thinking of names in a complete panic about the supposedly "wet" name I had in mind. SOS 🆘 Help needed! 🙏🏾

Without the article I'm not sure what you mean, but Tom is fine.

NuffSaidSam · 15/05/2020 14:41

You were going to use Tom, but a man in an article who is called Tom thinks his name is 'wet'. Is that what's happened?

I wouldn't worry about it. If you like it use it.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 15/05/2020 14:44

I love the name Tom. It's a proper manly strong name. However it's gentle at the same time. Fits in all classes and all ages. All the Toms I've ever known or met have been lovely and very handsome.

obsessingovernames · 15/05/2020 14:44

Sorry I wasn't clear. Tom is the new name we are considering,

The article I read was about how a man felt about his "wet" name and it's made me rethink. The "wet" name we had in mind. Possibly hormones too, I'm just obsessing over it now and anxious about finding the right name that I won't be hated for 🙏🏽

What?

17caterpillars1mouse · 15/05/2020 14:45

I really like Tom, prefer Thomas but Tom is nice. Dislike Tommy though

NuffSaidSam · 15/05/2020 14:51

What's the 'wet' name?

obsessingovernames · 15/05/2020 14:52

Rupert

KrakowDawn · 15/05/2020 14:53

Well there's a bit of a gulf between Tom and Rupert!

NuffSaidSam · 15/05/2020 14:56

I knew it was going to be Rupert!!!!

Rupert is popular atm, so statistically there will be some cool Rupert's in the future.

I do think it's dreadful though. And Rupert the bear was the wettest of all the fictional bears.

obsessingovernames · 15/05/2020 14:56

I know, my brain is all over the shop. Really need some help.

Tom is a family name. That's why there is a difference in style.

I’m not sure I know what you’re on about, but my sons name is Tom and I love it. Well it’s thomas but he’s known as Tom, very classic and he likes it too. It doesn’t seem to age, and has a solidity to it.

KrakowDawn · 15/05/2020 15:03

I will warn you that Thomas is one of the most common boys names for last 100 years.
He will always be in classes with another that shares his name.
Plenty of other names that aren't quite as foppish as Rupert (though I have a very soft spot for the little white bear!).

Max
Monty
Oscar
James

What's your style?

coffeeandjuice · 15/05/2020 15:03

Don't worry about the fleeting opinions of others. Just go with what you like. Youll be the one laying in bed in a few years going "I wish we'd called him Tom/Rupert" no one else is going to be loosing sleep over it Smile

obsessingovernames · 15/05/2020 15:07

@krakowdawn Monty is such a lovely name. So I'd say my style is either "wet"/posh boy names: Rupert, Felix, Dominic (Will now add Monty) type names. Or short names like Tom, Guy, Drew, Joe. I appreciate they are rather far apart in terms of style.

Ahundredpercentthatbitch · 15/05/2020 15:09

I know brothers Tom and Rupert. Both are hulking rugby players - nothing wet about either of them.

KrakowDawn · 15/05/2020 15:12

We know two Felixs and a Monty- none of them are remotely wet.
But lots of people moan about Monty being a dogs' name. I think it's lovely though.
(And like to use literary names for pets in any case!)

VerityB1 · 15/05/2020 15:17

Tom is nice, but your baby will be beautiful and wonderful whatever you name him.

Bubbletrouble43 · 15/05/2020 15:18

Tom is a lovely name however my DP, three of my friends and countless acquaintances have sons named Tom. Its in my view the most popular name ever. But it is a good name.

obsessingovernames · 15/05/2020 15:18

That is so so kind of you. Thank you for making me feel better. Maybe I should start a different thread with the list of names on which may help me choose. Thanks for your help and being so kind

Bubbletrouble43 · 15/05/2020 15:18

I prefer Rupert purely for the fact I don't know about 500 of them.

userabcname · 15/05/2020 15:35

Tom is just so so common. It is the most common name in my age group (nearly every single one of DH's friends is called Tom and loads of my friends' husbands/boyfriends are too) plus in every year group I teach there is always a good handful of them too. I mean, it's fine but I'm at the point where I just find it boring now.

autumnkate · 15/05/2020 18:06

I don’t think Dominic is wet. Rupert is.

LuckyFlash · 15/05/2020 18:16

Much prefer Rupert. I know one (in his early 30s) who is one of the coolest people I know. He goes by Ru.
Tom is fine but a bit boring imo

Orphlids · 15/05/2020 18:25

Tom is a great name, not at all wet. Rupert is a great name, with the potential to be a bit wet. I certainly wouldn’t let it put me off. I’d be more excited about meeting a Rupert than a Tom because Tom is so mainstream. I agree with a PP - Toms are always handsome.
