Huge name regret after Coronavirus

Holidayseveryday · 13/05/2020 20:57

I’m posting on here as it’s anonymous and I’m so ashamed to admit I’m thinking of changing my almost 1 year olds name.

I loved earthy and nature names for girls so after a couple of weeks of deliberation once she was born we named her Sage.

Since then a pandemic has happened, and every day at 5pm theres a government press conference where they talk about “SAGE” “what SAGE says” and their “consultations with SAGE”
(SAGE stands for the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies.)

All I can think is that from now on for the rest of her life whenever I tell people (or she tells people ) her name is Sage all people will think of is this pandemic and all they will mention is the government advisory committee!

It was already a bit of a marmite name and Ive never had very positive responses to it, even before this.

I could change it to her middle name which is more of a common name. If she grows up to hate her name I will regret not changing it when I had the chance, but then she knows her name would it be cruel and confusing to change it now?

It’s causing me so much mum guilt, anxiety and worry.

Has anyone changed their child’s name? Any thoughts on what I should do?

Thank you in advance Smile

I'm dying for them to come up with a brand of condoms or laxatives called Amelia, just to stop the obsession.

It's fine OP. Leave it as is.

ViciousJackdaw · 14/05/2020 00:13

@Carouselfish Amelia is a birth defect. I kid you not...

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 14/05/2020 00:14

. I thought you'd named her Covid-9teen or something before I opened the bloody thread. BlushGrin.

JessicaDay · 14/05/2020 00:18

Watching an old Project Runway season and one of contestants is called Kovid. Poor fella.

I think Sage is a very pretty name. If you’re really uncomfortable with it though, try the middle name transition and see how it goes. If she doesn’t respond to it you’ve got your answer.

Snooks1971 · 14/05/2020 00:29

Sage is a beautiful name! It’s her name and it belongs to her, no need to change it. It’s a lovely name and meaning too.

My youngest DD is called Pearl, not that many of those about we thought..... until she was 4 or 5 years old and bloody Tampax (no pun intended) decided to have a rebrand to Tampax Pearl or something. I worried a bit at the time, but no repercussions!

Please don’t worry x

whatausername · 14/05/2020 00:32

To put it politely: lockdown is f*cking with your mind. As it is doing to all of us! The mind-trick it's playing on you is with your daughter's name. Her name is totally fine, really rather nice even (and I freely and recklessly hate many a name :-P).

People will remember covid-19, they will not remember the committee exists, let alone it's name and acronym. Can you remember any committee associated with H1N1, Foot & Mouth, SARS, Ebola, the Iraq War, the Afghan War, the First Gulf War or WW2? Can you name any committee that has to do with The Troubles, Stephen Lawrence or historic sex abuse inquiries? Nope. Nobody remembers the committees. Tbh, nobody really cares about them. They get trotted out at the appropriate time so the public feels reassured or the gov looks Very Serious. But truly nobody pays attention.

Give your little Sage lots of cuddles, if safe, and start looking forward to the future. She's so much to learn and see!

whattodo2019 · 14/05/2020 00:33

SAGE or no Sage, it's a bizarre name I'm
afraid. I think changing it would be a very good idea. What would you change or to?

Mothership4two · 14/05/2020 00:50

SAGE or no Sage, it's a bizarre name I'm afraid

Bizarre?? It's quite common to use herb, flower and tree names for christian names. Sage is not commonplace but it has been around for decades, at least, for both male and females.

Yours was a bizarre comment I'm afraid and unnecessarily unkind

Mish85 · 14/05/2020 01:13

I love the name Sage. I think you may be over thinking it. Before the pandemic did you like the name? If so I would keep it.

Cbeebiesrehab · 14/05/2020 01:16

Honestly, OP you’re overthinking it. I wouldn’t make the link at all and I think it would be a real shame to change her name. Also, please take into account that most of those on here that are saying change it aren’t saying that due to the SAGE association but because they don’t like it. It’s a marmite name (my daughter has one too) but you shouldn’t change it because some anonymous people online think you should have played it safer. If Sage decides she doesn’t like it when she’s older then she can choose to go by her middle name. Be kind to yourself OPFlowers

Greenmarmalade · 14/05/2020 01:18

Gorgeous name. I don’t think anyone will recall the science group.

JessicaDay · 14/05/2020 04:05

Bit off-topic but the Project Runway Contestant called Kovid I mentioned before has just sent his model down the catwalk in a facemask that co-ordinates with her outfit.

It’s like some freaky weird premonition. I think it’s the 2018 or 2019 season.

Aclh13 · 14/05/2020 04:55

I agree with higher up regardless of the virus all I think of is a herb and harsh ect. If it was me I'd change her name while I can to something like Sarah ect. I wouldnt worry in my infancy I changed last name multiple times and my first name had 2 changes x

Aclh13 · 14/05/2020 04:59

Adding on maybe
Sadie
Sapphire
Seraphina
Serena
Saoirse
Samara
Savvanah
Saffron
Saskia
Sallie
Sabine
Salena
Samantha
Sasha
Or not something SA

whatswithtodaytoday · 14/05/2020 05:17

It's a pretty name, don't change it. I love nature names too. I wouldn't think of the advisory group at all, even though they're in the news all the bloody time at the moment.

For all you know whatever you change her name to could end up being used in a negative way in years to come (see Isis, Alexa).

hoodathunkit · 14/05/2020 07:29

Lot of people called their baby girls Daenerys and Khaleesi

That worked out well

OP Sage means wisdom, as in sage advice

The reason the scientific advisory group is called SAGE is because they want to convey and impression of wisdom

I really like the name

:)

Sophia means wisdom also

IrisAtwood · 14/05/2020 07:39

It makes me think of a very wise person or the herb.

Reginabambina · 14/05/2020 07:47

@Lailaloo747 I kept thinking how horrible that would be (considered isis when pregnant with first child)

tiredanddangerous · 14/05/2020 08:14

I don’t associate it with Covid at all op. The accounting software though...

WhittlingIhopMonkey · 14/05/2020 08:19

I've never even heard of the scientific government agent whatsit. Sage is a gorgeous name, dont change it.

Lol at the poster with the DD pearl right before Tampax Pearl 😂

caribooshriek · 14/05/2020 08:28

If you're not comfortable with your DD's name, change it!

Finnemoo · 14/05/2020 09:51

I would never have made any connection there. Sage is lovely! And honestly, I think 1 is too old to change a child’s name anyway.

Fisher1008 · 14/05/2020 10:05

I really like Sage, I know two other babies called Sage and there is a character on Gossip Girl too. I’m a teacher and there is a student called Saige too.

I definitely would never think of that advisory group- it’s pretty keep it.

Mucklowe · 14/05/2020 10:37

I wouldn't make the connection.

My friend named his daughter Isis right before ISIS rose up...

Spirali · 14/05/2020 10:47

I wouldn’t think of the group. I think Sage is a lovely name and it’d be a shame to change it! She will be very used to it by now also. There’s lots of kids names Isis too 🤷🏼‍♀️
