How to pick a girls name? Find fault with everything... shortlist included

Hi - I feel like every name I like/love I also find fault with. It's got to a point where I'm settling on names because they have the 'least' wrong with them. Am I overthinking things? Certain names I love are in the top 30 names so I veto for that reason. Others are good but one of the syllables has a funny vibe or reminds me of something unpleasant. How do you choose????

DP and I have settled atm on two which we both like/love: Rosa and Aurelia. DP really likes Aurelia, whereas Rosa is my favourite. Aurelia I like but I don't like how it can be pronounced in many diff ways and its quite long/princessy... Rosa seems simple, classic, sophisticated...

The last name is long and is a bit unusual so I want her to have a relatively simple name.

Other names I like are:

Anais
Eva
Ailsa (DP doesn't like)
Olivia (too popular though and I knew one who I don't like, but strangely doesn't put me off)
Isla (too popular)
Margot /Maurgaux
Rosalia (partner thinks it sounds like a skin disease)
Alodia
Alba
Mila

But yeah, I just find fault with everything. Any advice on how to stop over thinking and pick?

I have a real soft spot for the name Rose. I think it's beautiful. I do like Aurelia too but would pick Rose out of all your names! I think it helps to use the name and say it lots to get a feel for it. So maybe one day refer to the baby as Rose all day and the next refer to her as Aurelia. See which you prefer! We did this with both our boys and found it really helpful.

Reader1984 · 13/05/2020 19:21

Rosa and Eva are both good, classic names.

BullshitVivienne · 13/05/2020 19:22

@IslayBrigid from the 2 I much prefer Rosa. Simple, classic, not too common but everyone knows how to say and spell it, cute on a little one, elegant on a lady and very feminine but not prissy and princessy.

Spied · 13/05/2020 21:13

Go Rosa.
Simple and classic.

3girlsmama · 13/05/2020 21:15

Can you do Rosa with Aurelia as middle name?

missmouse101 · 13/05/2020 21:22

Rosa is lovely. Don't like any of your other possibilities, especially Emilia (mealy...Envy)

Maybelatte · 13/05/2020 21:43

I like Aurelia but I don’t think it works with British accents and I’d worry about it being linked to ‘oral’ in secondary school.

Anais- love this
Eva- very popular, not my taste
Ailsa (DP doesn't like)- not keen at all, never heard of it before
Olivia (too popular though and I knew one who I don't like, but strangely doesn't put me off)- way too common
Isla (too popular) - again, way too common
Margot /Maurgaux - like it, prefer Margot
Rosalia (partner thinks it sounds like a skin disease)- does remind me of the skin disorder
Alodia- never heard of this but not keen
Alba- 1990s electrics company
Mila- not a fan

From your choices I’d go with Anais or Margot. I don’t like Rosa either.

MadameJosephine · 13/05/2020 21:51

I love the sound of Aurelia but I don’t think I’d actually use it, it’s just a teeny bit too much for me. How about Aurora? I love Aurora with Rory as a nn

CostaCosta · 13/05/2020 22:10

Cecelia (I like the shortened Cece though, otherwise have the song in my head)
Clara
Cora
Marvaelia
Henrietta
Beatrice

NeedToKnow101 · 13/05/2020 22:57

I love Rosa (posted already) but I also love Cecelia. But Rosa more.

I know you don't like names ending with Ie but Aurelie is a South African name and is similar to Aurelia

peperethecat · 14/05/2020 08:36

I absolutely love Rosa. It's the nicest out of all the names on your list.

VerityB1 · 14/05/2020 09:11

Just love commenting on names, thank you. Loving Rosa (cant work out how to pronounce other one, so poor kid will always have probs with people like me) Other suggestions:
Rosina, Rosamund, Rose, Rosanna (but loving Rosa)
Anna (Anne, Ann, Annie)
Verity, Briony
Nel
Honora
Aminta
Lettie (Henrietta, Lettuce)
Lottie (Charlotte, Carlotta)

IslayBrigid · 14/05/2020 10:27

Thank you everyone! It seems Rosa is definitely the clear winner... this does chime with my instinct. DP has said if I really want Rosa we can do it. I just don't think he loves it, which ideally he would. Oh well. I'll see if he's keen for Aurelia as a middle name... we have Vivienne lined up as middle name atm but could do two.

I also really like some of the other suggestions! I love Audra but DP said no. He loves Cecilia, but it's too frilly for me.

Do post any other ideas if they come to you! :)

xxx

Oh and yes I love Rosamund too, thought could do that and have Rosa as nn but actually, i think Rosa is fine on its own as well.

Rosa is fine on its own but Rosamund is also a good option.

BelfortGabbz · 15/05/2020 11:45

Rosa is lovely.

Ellmau · 15/05/2020 12:04
