Have you used different types of names?

I have a Sienna and an Arthur.

I often get people saying, why did you pick such a traditional name and such a modern one.

The answer is I like older names on boys and modern on girls.

Has anyone else done this??? I never thought about it until people started asking me when I said their names.

Yeah, my children have a mix of traditional and modern!
People have asked, and commented. Doesn’t bother me in the slightest. I love the names I have chosen.
When I love a name, I love it. Regardless of of it being traditional or modern!

ALittleBitofVitriol · 13/05/2020 10:39

Yes, our third has a different style to the others. We just... felt it was right for him.

Siblings are their own people, not part of a designer set, no-one will care after a while.

Orphlids · 13/05/2020 10:45

Yes, my two children’s names are totally different ‘categories’. No one has ever commented, and I never realised it was an issue to anyone until I came on Mumsnet and found a whole host of people talking about how siblings’ names should ‘go’. I don’t get it really. Not sure what the benefits are of picking names which feel similar.

babynamelover · 13/05/2020 11:23

My eldest has a Greek name and my youngest an older fashioned name but both seem to go together if you like 😊.
I think if both names are popular you don't notice as much as you hear them all the time (regardless of style) but say you picked Ella and then Aphrodite or Joseph and Apollo (no offence to anyone intended if these are your offsprings names) you might be a little surprised... But hey it's good to be surprised and what matters is if you love them no matter what they are called!

Whatsyourflava · 13/05/2020 11:45

I think Sienna and Arthur sound great together

Lavenderblues · 13/05/2020 11:58

I don't get this whole 'matchy' name thing!

DanniArthur · 13/05/2020 12:02

I get what you mean. My DD is Isabelle which is a popular choice but had she been a boy she would have been Atticus! My partner was relieved she was a girl as Atticus Arthur sounds like a children's TV character... Although if we ever have a boy that's his name 🤣

Blursula · 13/05/2020 12:18

My brother has a traditional biblical name and I have an unusual Greek name nobody can pronounce. Nobody has ever commented or batted an eyelid. I find it confusing that people feel siblings have to ‘match’ - agree they’re completely their own people

nevergoingoutagain · 13/05/2020 12:21

I don't like traditional boy names (so boring) so a boy would have had a pretty out there name tbh bit as it happens I have all girks and they have traditional but not common names. If I'd liked a modern name enough though I'd have used it tbh. My youngest girls middle name is Winter though so not traditional. I did consider it as a first name but I did do that thing of thinking it wouldn't go with the others so I guess I did match them but wouldn't have if I had a boy...weird !

Spied · 13/05/2020 12:25

My DC's names are both associated with different countries.

Lazydaisydaydream · 13/05/2020 12:25

I don't think names need to match or be of the same style, but my sister has a family name which means a lot to my parents, whereas when they named me they just picked something they liked the sound of, no special meaning and no connection to the family. It's silly but it's always bothered me a bit!!

Enko · 13/05/2020 13:06

if I was told Sienna and Arthur for a sibling pair I would simply think" top 100 names" and I would not think " modern/oldfashioned " To me, they are names of the current times.

I do however have what many see as different types of names in my 4

dd1 is Phoebe (she was born in 98 so back then it was not so terribly popular) her siblings are Eloisa, Conrad and Aoife. MANY comments that they do not "go" and they do not somehow fit together. We get comments particularly on Aoife and Phoebe as they do not fit in.. Phoebe is SO popular and Aoife well its Irish and the rest are not. I often point out they do go as they would all have been names used at the turn of the last century... However, for me, they are named this because DH and I loved the names. I wish Phoebe had not become so popular but I still love it as a name and she suits her name.

If I was to get the chance to change their names and no one else would know type thing I wouldn't do it as I love them as does Dh. My children all like their names too though Aoife likes to complain we gave her a name no one can spell she also admits to liking it. She is moving to Denmark in August to go to school and is considering taking up using her VERY Danish middle name as it will be easier. I can't see it happen but if she was to do so I would be ok with it I gave her that middle name for a reason and I like it.

XxrosesxX · 13/05/2020 13:11

Yes it's hard isn't it. See I am not a fan of the modern boys names like rex, Milo, Theo, Marley etc. But that's just me.

Things like Alfie, Archie, Freddie I love.

On a girl I like girlie names like Eva, Ava, Mia, Mila etc.

Haha I was one of four girls. My mum had two marriages. Me and my sister (both the same dad) kind of got treated different. My sister was given my dad's name but the girls version in the middle as a nod to him. I got a really horrible name that people have always mocked and I hate it. My parents had awful taste. I love my middle name but my dad hated it. So my mum sneaked it in.

@XxrosesxX that is really the important bit that you love the names. I btw think they go

and yes Aoife is pronounced ee fah :)

Malysh · 13/05/2020 14:42

I think that when you name your children that's often years apart and you are in different places mentally and emotionally, so it makes a lot of sense to have different sorts of names.

My oldest has a russian first name. For my second I'm not considering a russian name because, while this made sense at the time for DS1, the circumstances are different today for DS2. Also I don't think having a russian name for my first means I can only give russian names for the subsequent ones, that'd be stupid !

samandpoppysmummy · 13/05/2020 17:52

Mine are Samuel (traditional Old Testament name) and Poppy (modern name). I think they go well together, although my DS is always known as Sam.

Sienna and Arthur sound great together :)

Edenember · 13/05/2020 21:44

@XxrosesxX I understand why people would be interested and ask as they are stylistically different, as long as the people are just inquiring without being rude. I love names and general word etymology so I might also ask? But not rudely, just interested. I wouldn’t need to as you’ve answered succinctly above and that’s all you need to say on the matter really. I don’t necessarily feel the need to have super matchy names myself as that can be overkill, sometimes names sound good together in a more subtle sense than being of exactly the same type. You don’t need a ‘theme’ when it comes to naming your children.

AdriannaP · 13/05/2020 21:48

Siena the city is pronounced differently than Sienna.

TerribleCustomerCervix · 13/05/2020 21:58

We have a Sadhbh and a William.

We’re in NI so I often get people being a bit bug eyed about the combination of Super Irish and Mega Prod names 😂

mathanxiety · 13/05/2020 22:13

Yes, mine are all over the place.
They are all family names but nobody knows that.

I have French, Anglicised Irish, Hebrew, Shakespeare/Italian, and Greek/Russian.

Some are really old fashioned and one is uber popular.

The middle names are far more 'of a kind' (though also family names). When the names are seen in full including the middle names they all make sense.

Aclh13 · 14/05/2020 05:17

Me and my sisters have vastly different names
Chloe, Ellen, Grace, maisie and Mathilda with also very different European and traditional Middle names eg, nuala, Lorna and Fiona

nevergoingoutagain · 30/05/2020 22:10

My babies (they're not babies now 😭) all have traditional but less used names. That's just because I like them. If I'd liked a more modern name or out there band I would have used it. In fact if my 3rd has been a bit she would have been Winter which is actually a family name but a bit out there. My daughter has it as her middle name. I could have used it for a girl but I liked her first name too much.

I have Frances, Esther and Josephine. Esther and Josie more popular now but Frances still very unusual.
