Please find us a name?!

We're having a boy and cannot for the lofw of us agree on a name.

DH prefers more traditional names -

  • Edward
  • George
  • William

I prefer more unusual names -

  • Otis
  • Casper
  • Ellis

I don't like his, he doesn't like mine. We agreed on almost every potential girls name but now we're having a boy we're totally stumped!

Any recommendations that combine tradition with a more unusual twist?

It's driving me insane!

...and by 'lofw', I of course mean life!

Tough situation !

  • any girl names you both like that have a boy version ?
  • how about classic but unusual names such as Jonas, Joachim, Maximilian...?
  • Can you both write a fairly extensive list of what you like and see if anything matches on both lists ?
AragornsManlyStubble · 13/05/2020 07:56

Edmund
Giorgio
Wilfred.

Not necessarily these though.

They can all be shortened to the more usual short versions of his names, but are still less common. That’s what I’d be looking for, longer names that you’re happy to shorten so you both get a sound you want.

I only ever liked one boy’s name and I gave it to my son - Guy. That said, my grand daughter did ask me recently why I gave her daddy such a funny name!
I also like David. Basically, I’m afraid I prefer your husband’s choices and do remember, that you will love the baby whatever its name

Love Edward from your husbands, then Otis from yours! That said, it doesn’t really help your situation! Grin 😂
Maybe you need to find a traditional name that your husband likes. Then a shortened nn version for it that you like?
For example:
Edward nn Teddy
Wilfred nn Wilf
Theodore nn Theo/Teddy

Alexander with Zander as NN?

pippapegga · 13/05/2020 08:40

Thanks for the replies, it's funny because there are so many girls names I LOVE, whereas most boys names I think are 'fine/nice' and perhaps I'm being unrealistic in thinking I'm going to fall in love with a boys name too. Lots of great suggestions though, and I do really like Xander as short for Alexander, and I do like Lucas and Sebastian/Seb too. Will suggest to DH tonight!

Could you perhaps find some middle ground by thinking of names that are traditional, but not quite as royal as Edward, George and William?

Things like Jacob, Luke, Harvey, Daniel, Joshua etc.

However they are quite common so if you want a more unusual name, maybe something like Noel, Spencer, Jonty, Carl?

I'm in the same situation. I hope this will be a girl only because I'm worried it won't have a name if it's a boy.

Sparklypurpleunicornsaremyfav · 13/05/2020 09:09

I like the idea of a traditional name but with a more unusual nickname... The actor from that 70's show is called Topher, its only recently I found out he's actually called Christopher but didn't like the normal shortenings

BikeRunSki · 15/05/2020 11:19

I have a cousin known as Topher. In his 50s now, he’s keen for people to know “Erm.... I prefer Chris actually....”. Family still call him Topher or Toffee, much to his children’s delight!!

FizzyGreenWater · 15/05/2020 20:44

Jonathan nn Jonty is great - super traditional but unusual.

Sebastian is lovely

The trouble with Xander for Alexander is that people will automatically start using Alex - it's THE default shortening - especially if you have any eg grannies who don't like Xander as much. Better to go for a name where they will HAVE to use your chosen name/shortening.

I love Otis. Was my boys name until I discovered we were having another girl!

Also quite keen on Atlas but know many aren't!!

BeMorePacific · 18/05/2020 11:17

We have a little boy called Edward, but he only gets Ted, occasionally Teddy.
If I have another boy, I want to go for Alfred, but shorten to Fred or Alf (not sure I can get away with having Ted & Fred!) x x
