We’re expecting a baby in the summer but can’t decide on a potential boys name...
Opinions on Bobby or Eddie?

Edward or Robert?

Bono8 · 12/05/2020 22:51

Maybe Edison instead of Edward but not a huge fan of Robert?

Robin could also work as a full name for Bobby. I'm not keen on Eddie or Bobby as full names; he might want something less informal sounding in the future.

seriousandloyal · 12/05/2020 23:02

I prefer Bobby. My favourite character in Dallas!

Eddie is ok. Bobby is awful.

Whatsyourflava · 12/05/2020 23:24

I love both Bobby and Eddie

Puppybum · 12/05/2020 23:26

Can you imagine a 40 yr old professional man introducing himself as "Bobby"

Aclh13 · 13/05/2020 00:39

Literally everyone I know is calling their children 'Bobby' at the minute, I think in a few years it will be one of those names where there's four 'bobbys' in the same class type of thing. Eddie is sweet though.

Malysh · 13/05/2020 07:28

If you don't like Robert I'd steer clear of Bobby.

Personally I can't stand diminutives instead of full names on birth certificate. It feels cutesy, lazy and incomplete. Just my opinion though, you do you.

But yeeeh I'd pick Edward. Edison sounds like a last name to me.

Fiflowertot · 13/05/2020 08:19

Bobby for sure! Smile

Orphlids · 13/05/2020 08:19

If I were a man, I think I’d really hate to be called Bobby. It’s so cutesy. I’d want a name that made me feel sexy and masculine. Bobby will spend far longer as a grown man than a baby or toddler. If he decides to be a CBeebies presenter, it would be fine, but in every other scenario, I can imagine he’d feel a bit humiliated when introducing himself. I quite like Eddie, but there’s perhaps something of the spiv about it on its own like this? Edward, with Eddie as a nickname would be fine.

Bloomburger · 13/05/2020 08:29

I think they both sound v common. Ed or Ted maybe for Edward but there's nothing you can do for Robert or Bob or Bobby to make it sound nice.

Strugglingtodomybest · 13/05/2020 08:35

I don't particularly like either. Bobby just reminds me of Bobby Ball, and then I shorten it to Bob and can't help myself repeating it in the manner of Blackadder.

I like Edward, but then Eddie reminds me of Eddie the Eagle. Ed is nice though.

Mish85 · 13/05/2020 08:48

Hobert, Oberon and, Robin, Robinson and Ambrose I think could all have Bobby as nn. Edwin would be nice for Eddie.
But I think Bobby and Eddie are fine by themselves too.

LotusClover · 13/05/2020 08:54

Strongly dislike both, sorry. Way too childish and cutesy. They're not strong professional names and I can't picture either of them on a grown man.

It's not so bad if you put Robert or Edward on the birth certificate so that he can go by Bobby or Eddie if he chooses to. But if you don't like the full versions then I would choose something different. Bobby and Eddie just don't work as standalone names for me.

Lavenderblues · 13/05/2020 09:13

Both names are too cutesy imo, sorry.

And Bobby sounds comical and weak to my ears.

Lavenderblues · 13/05/2020 09:15

And Bob is almost as bad!

Blursula · 13/05/2020 10:21

can you imagine a 40 year old professional man introducing himself as ‘Bobby’?

Erm, yes?

XxrosesxX · 13/05/2020 10:24

Both are nice. Eddie gives of a more country/wealthy vibe to me. Bobby sounds more like he would be daring/mischievous and happy go lucky lol.

babynamelover · 13/05/2020 10:32

I'm assuming you live in the UK I don't get the whole giving boys nicknames as first names craze.
I think they are far too cutsey for a grown man and limiting.
At least go with Edward/Edmund or Robert/Wilbert.

MikeUniformMike · 13/05/2020 18:06

Eddie could be Edward, Edwin, Edgar, Edmund
Bobby could be Robert, Robin, Robson

Eddie and Bobby are a bit too informal.

MikeUniformMike · 13/05/2020 18:11

FWIW, Eddie Tremayne has done ok for himself, although I doubt that Edward's years at Eton did him any harm either
and Bobby Robson (Sir Robert William Robson) seemed to manage all right.

Maybelatte · 13/05/2020 21:49

Edward or Robert are fine. I hate diminutives used on the birth certificate, everyone deserves a full name.

Lavenderblues · 14/05/2020 12:22

Robert Robson Grin

I'd also shorten to Bob/Bobby!
