Otto?

Love this name, but put off by the grandmas reactions, which have been to relentlessly suggest other names and query where this one has come from.

Baby due in a week and this is still my favourite, but is it a bit too out there?

I love it too!

userabcname · 12/05/2020 06:16

Love it too!

I advise you not to discuss baby names with anyone other than your husband! People wouldn’t be rude about the name once the baby is here.

MintyMurray17 · 12/05/2020 08:13

Love the name Otto! We went for an unusual Germanic name for DS1, and my advice would be if you love the name enough that a few raised eyebrows or passive comments won't bother you, use the name and enjoy raising a little boy who is proud to be unique Smile

CyrilSneer30 · 12/05/2020 08:17

Love Otto! We were between Otto and Milo for DS3, he’s ended up as Milo (mainly as he was born in Germany and they did not hold back in hospital when we suggested it was a possibility - it is NOT a popular name there!) but I’m still a bit gutted I didn’t use it!

chunkyrun · 12/05/2020 08:18

I love it

Whatsyourflava · 12/05/2020 08:55

Adore the name
So jealous you're using it
My husband originally said no to it for our son as he felt it was too out there. Fast forward six months, he realises it sounds totally normal amongst today's baby names (we've not met an Otto yet though) and he loves it. Typical
I'm sure your Grandma will be exactly the same and come round to it

PowerStruggle · 12/05/2020 09:01

We are having twins and will have a Fionn and an Otto - we had intended to keep the names secret (for this reason!) but my husband accidentally referred to Otto by his name when he gave me a big kick in front of my mum, and then with all the lockdown stuff and in the interest of fairness he thought we should just tell his mum too.

We are doing daily phone calls to stay in touch..but everyday!!!!! Oliver is a nice name, Noah is nice, would Arlo be better. I feel like Otto is just his name now.

I’m so glad other people don’t think it’s super wacky 😁

I think you can be firm but fair and say "we spent a long time going through names and feel really happy now with our choices and aren't looking at other options"

Whatsyourflava · 12/05/2020 09:04

Your grandmother had her turn to pick names, it's your turn now

PowerStruggle · 12/05/2020 09:06

In fairness to my husband he does just say those are nice names but he’d be confused if we called him those because they aren’t his name. We picked names much too early I think in hindsight, but have been calling them their names for about 6 months now - would feel weird to suddenly change. We have given them completely “normal” middle names after the grandads so they will have an option when they are older if they hate it 😬

DC3 was going to be an Otto! But we didn't go with it in the end and he has an even cooler name. Grin Sorry. I am boasting!
Otto is a great name. It's quite old school German (my second language- my family is Czech/Polish/German) and I would assume you are Czech or German or have German or Czech parents (but that's just me, personally).
Emil is also a cool name.

TheVanguardSix · 12/05/2020 09:18

Oh sorry! I see you've gone with the name. [grin[ Otto and Fionn sounds beautiful together. Great names, OP!
It's funny. We got a bit of flack for NOT going with Otto in the end. Grin
One of my best friends emailed me at 3 in the morning telling me that she was so disappointed that we weren't going with Otto in the end. Weird reaction! Even my own family would never do that.
Anyway, our 'Not Otto' is going on 6 years old and is every inch his name. They become their name and your grandmother will be totally ok with Otto. Don't worry at all.

It could be that it's a German name and maybe your grandma is a bit funny about this.
With DC1 especially, we had the battle of the German-Czech names with the battle of the Russian names (other grandma), battle of the Jewish names, battle of the Irish names (Irish grandma came in with her arsenal of names, backed by the Irish aunties- the toughest army of the bunch). Our list was a mess. We didn't name DC1 for month after his birth because we were just overwhelmed by the family. Imagine a battlefield scattered with baby names.
Anyway, congratulations on two very cool names for your beautiful, soon-to-be- here twins!

TheVanguardSix · 12/05/2020 09:19

oh 'grin' fail. That should be: Grin.

babynamelover · 12/05/2020 09:47

Otto is cool :) Oliver and Oscar are both accepted why not Otto! I love o endings too 😍

PowerStruggle · 12/05/2020 10:10

I feel much better now! People keep telling me not to make decisions when I’m pregnant because my brain is addled 😂

I really like the name Otto.

Fleamaker123 · 12/05/2020 10:19

Otto is lovely! We had comments about our son's name, it's very middle of the road! but if you tell people before baby is born I think they think it's an opportunity to voice opinion! Stick to your guns, your choice.

123Dancewithme · 12/05/2020 10:19

I like it. It’s considered very old fashioned in Germany though.

TheRattleBag · 12/05/2020 10:23

I think it's lovely, but it will always remind me of Kevin Kline in A Fish Called Wanda (but that's probably 'cos I'm old!)

PlanDeRaccordement · 12/05/2020 10:26

Would his full name be Ottokar? Otto is the nickname for that.

pinkpinecone · 12/05/2020 10:28

Otis is a similar name which is also nice.

Dyra · 12/05/2020 10:38

I like it too, but I associate it with the school bus driver in The Simpsons.

They'll get used to it. My mum had a similar reaction when I told her the name we were going to use if we had a girl. Took her a few weeks to accept it, but accept it she did. Which was lucky as we did go on to have a girl. Now mum can't envision her being called anything else. She just is her name.

Mimishimi · 12/05/2020 10:42

I like Otto. I've been reading a lot about Otto Wels lately. A great man.

Orphlids · 12/05/2020 10:48

I absolutely love the name Otto. Quirky, but not totally bonkers. My favourite book as a child was ‘The Silver Crown’ which had a little boy called Otto in it. I can’t imagine an unkind Otto. The ‘o’ at the end makes it sound gentle, but the hard ‘t’ in the middle gives it a masculinity which is missing from Arlo.
