Hetty - short for Heather or Henrietta gets my vote!!

BarbaraBeast · 10/05/2020 10:39

Definitely Hettie-although I am biased as it’s my little girl’s name. She was going to be registered as Henrietta to begin with but in the end we went with just Hettie as it seemed like extra hassle to be registered as a name she would never be known by.
We’ve always had lovely comments on her name and I’m so glad we went with it-nothing would suit her like Hettie Spaghetti does Smile

I tend to prefer ie endings so I would say Hettie

peperethecat · 10/05/2020 18:46

Either, provided it’s short for Harriet or Henrietta

This.

Staffori · 10/05/2020 20:06

Why would anyone shorten Harriet to Hetty? It should be Hattie, which is also lovely.

Miriel · 10/05/2020 20:16

Hetty - short for one of the other names mentioned above. It seems too insubstantial on its own.

Overthinker1988 · 10/05/2020 23:08

I like Hettie. It does sound like a nickname for Harriet or Henrietta though. But then lots of nicknames are now names in their own right I suppose.

Hester nn Hettie was on our girl list many years ago. I love the name but only has boys!

FunnysInLaJardin · 10/05/2020 23:12

had!

I like Hetty, in the same way that I like Kitty, Lucy and Molly, but am not so enamoured of Kittie, Lucie or Mollie.
I would also think Hetty was short for Henrietta or Harriet or similar (love Harriet / Hetty) and would think her parents cool for choosing such a strong name, but not so much so if it was 'just' Hetty.
Hetty also looks good on an adult woman, whereas Hettie looks as if said woman had parents who gave their daughter a diminutive version of a girls' name.
When I gave one DD a name that is traditionally spelt with a 'y', I had to fight off friends who preferred the cutesier 'ie' spelling.

DartmoorChef · 10/05/2020 23:30

Hetty, and i like Etta too.

Yes! I have a first name that follows this pattern. One of my parents told me that with hindsight they wished they'd picked the atypical -ie spelling, because it was cuter and more girly. I told them I was very glad they didn't, because as an adult woman I don't want to be perceived as cute and girly. Having a name ending in an -ee sound without a longer version to fall back on is bad enough.

I personally prefer the spelling Hetty to Hettie, I think ie generally looks more cutsey although the French use ie Lucie.
I would give a longer name though Hester is spunky 🤩
