Hi! Looking for honest opinions on my girls names list, cut it down and tell me why you've removed the ones you have? It's so long and me and OH constantly argue about which names deserve to be at the top (not pregnant yet but on month 5 of trying).

Lilia

Nora

Elsa/Elsie

Amelie
Lyla/Lilah/Lylah remove too many spellings, she will forever be telling people how to spell it
Leila/Laila
Sophia
Elia doesn’t feel like a whole name...
Elliot boys name
Ruby
Lilia Sounds made up
Nora Reminds me of falling down stockings in last of the summer wine
Elsa/Elsie cartoon character
Sylvie Someone’s grandma
Aurora difficult to say for children
Jolie reminds me of brad Pitt/Jen
Joie I think most people would spell this joey
Jovie sounds made up
Sienna
Elodie
Zoey
Caoimhe a nightmare to spell
Dolly/Dollie ok as a nickname
Avie
Adelie
Nina very harsh name, although I went to school with a bully with this name so probably why I think this.

The ones ives commented on I would remove.

whywhywhy6 · 07/05/2020 17:15

Amelie and Elodie are my favourite ❤️

Good luck!

finallychangedmyusername · 07/05/2020 17:17

I won't comment on them all, but these are my favourites: Sylvie, Elodie, Caoimhe, Zoe (this spelling) and Nina.

Nina Sylvie is a lovely combo actually, as is Caoimhe Zoe.

MikeUniformMike · 07/05/2020 17:18

Amelie - overused and was past its peak. Emily is so much nicer
Lyla/Lilah/Lylah - No to all of them
Leila/Laila - Yes. but so similar to lots of other names
Sophia - yes.
Elia - Isn't it a boy's name
Elliot - Isn't it a boy's name
Ruby - ok but a bit of a pet's name
Lilia - brand of tampons
Nora - Bloody Nora!
Elsa/Elsie - Elsa is nice, Elsie isn't
Sylvie - No
Aurora - no. A friend and I both struggle with Rs. Owowa or Ovova
Jolie - Not a name
Joie - no
Jovie - you what?
Sienna - at least it's a name
Elodie - no
Zoey - Zoe is so much classier
Caoimhe - given that it has more than one pronunciation in Irish, No
Dolly/Dollie - Dolly, yes
Avie - Tu as a middlie name? Did you?
Adelie - penguin
Nina - yes

Some of your suggestions are batshit.

Good luck with TTC!

userabcname · 07/05/2020 17:20

I'd cut it down to Nina, Sylvie or Leila. All the rest are ok but these three would be my top 3.

CocoLoco87 · 07/05/2020 17:22

I would keep Elliot, Nora, Zoey. I would have Nora as a nn for Eleanor though.

I think the rest of them are too overused, common, boring. But that's just my opinion.

My list of girls names were all French or Italian and we are neither French nor Italian Grin DH was baffled and vetoed them all Blush

WinWinnieTheWay · 07/05/2020 17:23

I love Nora, Sylvie, Zoe and Nina. They sound fresh and less usual than the others on your list.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 07/05/2020 17:23

I love

Aurora.
Jovie.
Nina.
Elsa.
Lilia
Zoey
Dolly.

Don't like the others. I don't get this sudden Nora fixation. It's not even old but retro. It's dowdy and frumpy.

pinkpinecone · 07/05/2020 17:26

Of your list I think Nina, Lilah, Ruby, Elodie and Aurora and are the nicest names.

RoryGilmoree · 07/05/2020 17:27

Amelie

Sophia

Lilia

Sylvie

Aurora

Sienna

Elodie

Zoey

Nina

Are my favourites from your list. Joie is not a name I've ever heard being used and I'm bilingual french/english.

Lifeaback · 07/05/2020 17:29

Amelie- I like this, it’s a pretty name
Lyla/Lilah/Lylah- not a fan and too many spellings so whichever one you pick your DD would have a lifetime of correcting people
Leila/Laila- no
Sophia- this is nice
Elia- have never heard this name so not sure how this is pronounced? If it’s Ellie-ah then it doesn’t doesn’t like a real name, if it’s el-eye-uh then sounds too close to ‘a liar’ in my head lol
Elliot- for a girl? Really? I wouldn’t personally
Ruby- okay
Lilia- sounds a bit like you liked lily but thought it was too boring, again doesn’t sound like a real name
Nora- I like ‘old lady’ names but this seems a bit too far
Elsa/Elsie- I love Elsie and it’s probably one of my fave names on your list
Sylvie- no
Aurora- okay
Jolie- no
Joie- if you pick this then please spell it as Joy otherwise it looks made up
Jovie- not a fan, makes me think of Bon jovie
Sienna- not to my personal taste but this is an okay name
Elodie- lovely
Zoey- okay
Caoimhe- okay if you are Irish living in Ireland but otherwise I think you would be crazy to use this, your daughter will be so fed up of having to tell people how to pronounce it
Dolly/Dollie- I think this is really sweet but can imagine a lot of people hate it
Avie- again another name I have never heard but I quite like it
Adelie- I like this
Nina- I love the name Nina

missmouse101 · 07/05/2020 17:29

Zoe, Nina and Sienna are the only ones I like. Others are boring, overused, meh or a bit weird!

Carrie7469 · 07/05/2020 17:32

I don't like any of them. Sophia isn't too bad. Please don't call a girl Elliot.
And Zoey is just made up. If you like it, go with Zoë

CountFosco · 07/05/2020 17:35

They are all those frilly girls names that have been overused in the last 20 years. Some of them are nice classic names (e.g. Sophia) but are tainted by association with the over abundance of vowels they are surrounded by. Call her Ruth.

CruCru · 07/05/2020 17:36

I like Sophia, Nora, Elsa and Nina. I’m not keen on names that have an unusual spelling (because they’ll have to keep explaining how to spell it or put up with colleagues emailing “Zoë”).

I love the sound of names like Amelie / Elodie but a French women once told me that these names are their equivalent of Pauline and Sandra (so late middle aged old fashioned). I don’t know whether this is still (or was ever) true but it would put me off.

Sparklypurpleunicornsaremyfav · 07/05/2020 17:45

Amelie - boring and will be confused with amelia and Emily
Lyla/Lilah/Lylah - kind of like it but too many varied pronunciations
Leila/Laila - as above
Sophia - nice
Elia - never seen this, wouldn't know how to pronounce it
Elliot - LOVE this name... For a boy
Ruby - boring and over used
Lilia - doesn't seem like a real name
Nora - on the fence, maybe as a nickname
Elsa/Elsie - elsie is one of my absolute favourite names
Sylvie - quite cute
Aurora - not getting the fascination with this name
Jolie - Angelina's surname
Joie - wouldn't know how to say it
Jovie - doesn't seem like a name
Sienna - don't like
Elodie - really like
Zoey - prefer zoe
Caoimhe - love this but be prepared for spelling and pronunciation problems
Dolly/Dollie - my best friend's little girl Dolly, cute
Avie - not heard of this, not keen
Adele - see above
Nina - love it
So I would say nina, elsie or elodie

suspiciouscowboy · 07/05/2020 17:46

You have wonderful taste! But my favourites are:

Elliot - theres a trend of gender neutral names like this
jolie - reminds me of Jolly, its a happy name
Sienna- beautiful colour
Nora - to me this is an explorers name

Sparklypurpleunicornsaremyfav · 07/05/2020 17:47

Sorry, just realised the second to last one auto changed, quite like Adele though!

ThatAgent99 · 07/05/2020 17:49

Hi,
I'm American, so take this fwiw:

Amelie - corny movie, no way
Lyla/Lilah/Lylah - first 2 spellings ok, ditch Lylah
Leila/Laila - trying to hard, no way
Sophia - ok if you don't mind super popular for the past 10 yrs
Elia - no way
Elliot - definitely not, boys name + trying too hard to be edgy
Ruby - ok
Lilia - no way, it's like milia which are those white dots in skin
Nora - good
Elsa/Elsie - don't you guys have Frozen?? Elsa no way and Elsie is a cow here, so no. Also, as someone whose proper name ends in -ie, I can tell you I wish I had a more formal first name
Sylvie - good
Aurora - good, crunchy though
Jolie - no, French try-hard
Joie - no
Jovie - no
Sienna - no too popular
Elodie - ok but again, the -ie problem
Zoey - no and I agree with above, Zoë if you must
Caoimhe - hell no, do you want her to suffer with people mispronouncing it her whole life?
Dolly/Dollie - no, corny and hick
Avie - no, unappealing
Adelie - no, Adele is better
Nina - good

CurlyEndive · 07/05/2020 17:50

My favourites are: Lyla, Sophia, Sylvia.

Least favourites: Elliot, Jovie, Nora.

ProfessorFrockdown · 07/05/2020 17:53

Amelie - no, too common
Lyla/Lilah/Lylah - no, too downmarket
Leila/Laila - no, will always be having to spell it
Sophia - nice
Elia - no, due to always having to spell it (again)
Elliot - no, this is a boy's name (or preferably a surname)
Ruby - fine
Lilia - fine
Nora - no. Faddish.
Elsa/Elsie - no, too cutesy
Sylvie - no, too Mumsnet
Aurora - quite like it, but fear it's also too Mumsnet
Jolie - no, because nobody would ever be able to spell it. Plus it's asking for trouble to call a girl anything to do with being "pretty", as it would invariably attract comment.
Joie - no. Is this actually a name?
Jovie - no. Bon Jovi.
Sienna - no, a bit downmarket
Elodie - nice, but becoming super-popular
Zoey - No, Zoe is better
Caoimhe - no, because I haven't the faintest idea how to pronounce it, and would not be the only one.
Dolly/Dollie - no, because it's too reminiscent of Dolores Haze
Avie - no, because it sounds like Avian
Adelie - no, because of the penguins (cute as they are)
Nina - no, because of 99 Red Balloons

Of those, Sophia is my favourite. Though I also like @CountFosco's suggestion of Ruth.

StellaDelMare · 07/05/2020 17:56

I would remove:

Elia (pronunciation issues, is it e-lee-yah or el-i-yah)

Elliot because to me it's more of a male name

Lilia because although it's pretty it sounds like lily and as a teacher I hate saying that name (don't know why!)

Caoimhe the spelling just seems clunky

And dolly, I feel like isn't a name that would be taken seriously as a first name.

Use the name test:
Could you see them as a teen? A powerful CEO? Try to imagine the name in different walks of life.

Like the rest though!

xeniiia · 07/05/2020 17:56

I love Ruby

CountFosco · 07/05/2020 17:56

Nora - to me this is an explorers name

You're thinking of Dora.

Rebelwithallthecause · 07/05/2020 17:59

Leila and Nina on my list too and I can’t decide between them
