OH found it and picked it out, he really likes it. I'm unsure! He's pronouncing it Niy-la as opposed to Nee-la. Do you think people would get it wrong? What are people's thoughts on it?

I've pronounce it Niy-la too! Sounds quite Asian to me.....maybe you are? It's quite nice, it could grow on me.

toomuchteaandcake · 07/05/2020 12:34

We are not! 🤣

I would say it niy la. I like it, reminds me a bit of Nala from lion king.

ChocolateChop · 07/05/2020 13:06

I like it, alternatively you could spell it Nyla. Nia is also lovely

Alexsay · 07/05/2020 13:09

I like it and would pronounce Ni-la not Nee-la.

LotusClover · 07/05/2020 13:11

I would spell it Nyla. It's an okay name but will probably me misheard as Mila a lot.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 07/05/2020 13:13

Makes me think nylon if I’m honest. You’ll get lots of different pronunciations.

Peachbubble · 07/05/2020 13:26

I would pronounce it Nyla, and I prefer that spelling. It's a nice sounding name, I like it.

Rosieredapples · 07/05/2020 14:21

Sorry it's way too similar to Nilla wafers a kind of round biscuit type thing.

Edenember · 07/05/2020 15:10

I’m not keen but it’s just down to personal taste. I’m not really keen on any of the -la ending names though so it’s really not specific to this one. It’s certainly unique without being too out there, she’ll be the only one in the class, and I don’t think people will often get pronounciation wrong. I would assume it’s nye-la xx

emmathedilemma · 07/05/2020 15:23

I wasn’t totally mad when I said it sounded Asian! www.babynames.com/name/nila

toomuchteaandcake · 07/05/2020 15:29

@emmathedilemma no not at all I knew the origin, I'm trying to work out if it puts me off or not! would hate to be accused of cultural appropriation 😂 but think it's fairly common to use names from different cultures these days

There was a character in ER called Neela, played by Parminder Nagra, so if I saw “Nila” I would assume it’s a name of Asian descent.

If you want it to be pronounced to rhyme with Tyler then I think you’d need to spell it Nyla.

But it does look kind of made up. I’m not a fan of taking an established name and changing the first letter, personally.

peperethecat · 07/05/2020 15:43

I would have pronounced it Neela.

If you want it pronounced Nyla then I would spell it that way.

123Dancewithme · 07/05/2020 15:46

I would have pronounced it Neela

20viona · 07/05/2020 15:50

I like it but I'd spell it nyla.

pilates · 07/05/2020 15:51

Niyla, it’s ok

Ash06 · 07/05/2020 15:55

I like it but i would also spell it Nyla, I also like Nola for a little girl too.

CodenameVillanelle · 07/05/2020 21:48

It's pretty boring tbh

I have a Nyla; I caught hold off the name from watching an ethnographic film 15 years ago about an Inuit family and one of the women was called Nyla - meaning The Smiling One. I just knew then if I had a daughter she would be called Nyla.

I always have a laugh to myself when she’s crying her head off 🤣 I think it’s also an Irish name too.

Obviously biased but I think it’s beautiful.

toomuchteaandcake · 08/05/2020 00:18

@SunshineAllTheWhile we're Irish so that's good! Thanks for sharing that Smile

I have always seen it spelt Naila, pronounced Ny-la.

I think it's a bit meh tbh.

Have you considered Anila (A-nee-luh)?

babynamelover · 08/05/2020 00:50

Fits with the whole Ayla, Isla, Myla craze 😃.
My daughter is at school with a Naia we also considered this with #1. I also like Nola similar vein.

daisy112 · 08/05/2020 07:38

I love it x
