We are trying to narrow down our list of girls names. I would like something pretty, not in the top 10 as we live in London and there will likely be a couple in each class.

Open to other suggestions! It’s our first and I’m finding it difficult to pick a name. Did you have the name picked or have a couple of names and selected it once DD/DS arrived?

Ada Clementine
Hattie (Harriet) Wren
Etta Josephine
Mabel ...
Etta Sunday

Oh I love them all!!

But Ada and Mabel are my favs...

I also love Maeve that is along your style?

pinkpinecone · 05/05/2020 12:06

Ada or Mabel would be my preference

NameChange30 · 05/05/2020 12:08

My favourite is Ada, love it.
I also like Etta.
I think Sunday is a strange choice for a middle name, though.
I dislike Mabel, it seems popular but I don't know why.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 05/05/2020 12:44

I only like Mabel and Esme (ezmay. The Ezmee pronunciation makes my teeth itch).
I can't grasp the hype with Etta. I think it's one of the worse harshest unfriendly names out there. However I'm very much in the minority.
It's definitely a mumsnet name, as they say.

QueenofFox · 05/05/2020 12:46

I live in London with 8 month old, 4yo and 7yo. We know 6 ada’s and 5 etta’s and 1 Harriet. Etta was my second choice for my daughter but I’m so glad we didn’t as it’s super popular in young kids, so I’d go for one of the others which are lovely.

Lifeaback · 05/05/2020 12:50

I love Ada, Etta and Mabel- that’s not massively helpful I know! I’m not a fan of Sunday as a middle name.

With all 4 of our DDs I have had a shortlist of my 3 top names and have picked once they’ve arrived. I find some names just fit better once you’ve seen your baby and tried saying the name out loud

KnobwithaK · 05/05/2020 12:54

Etta and Josephine are both lovely.

Maybe Dorothy? Or Joan/Joni?

not in the top 10 as we live in London and there will likely be a couple in each class
Why do you think this is more likely in London? I'm also in London and am expecting that the top 10 names will actually be less common here than they are in, say, the home counties. I would expect there to be more "hipster" names and also more names that aren't "traditionally English", so the Amelias and Olivias will be a bit more diluted if that makes sense!

ButterflyOfFreedom · 05/05/2020 12:55

Etta or Ada.

I like Iris & Daphne too.

Sb131216 · 05/05/2020 13:04

Really like all those, I think some will be getting more popular but who knows and it depends how much that bothers you anyway

We only had 1 name for dd because that's all we could agree on and eventually worked out the order as didn't want violet to be shortened to vi...
This time we have our boys name but I think will end up with 2 or 3 girls names to choose from if its a girl.. Depends if we can settle on something!

In my opinion, babies don't usually 'look' like a name at birth so just go with what you love most of get a feeling with

Biscuitsneeded · 05/05/2020 13:10

All nice. Other names in that vein:

Jean
Sally
Sylvia
Irene
Pearl
Nancy
Dora
Florence
Christabel

BabyDust13 · 05/05/2020 13:14

I love Harriet or Mabel but they are all nice the only one I'm not as keen on is Etta

Whatsyourflava · 05/05/2020 13:18

I've lived in London and actually never came across the same name twice at baby groups as there's such a mix of names there

Ada, Harriet, Etta, Esme, Mabel are all BEAUTIFUL

Favourite is probably Mabel and Esme and Ada

Angel2702 · 05/05/2020 13:22

Like those. Mabel is my favourite. Ada is very popular around here.

userabcname · 05/05/2020 13:28

I like Ada best. I really don't like Mabel or Harriet. Etta sounds the most unusual to me and I do like it. Esme is pretty but popular I think.

TempsPerdu · 05/05/2020 13:32

DD is 2 and we go to lots of toddler groups. We’re also in London. Mabel and Ada in particular are cropping up a lot - we know at least 3 or 4 of each. Ada seems to be replacing Eva/Ava so could get even more popular.

Haven’t come across an Etta yet but it seems very popular on here and could be used as an alternative to Ella etc - can see this rising in popularity too. (Sort of Hope it doesn’t though as DD is Greta with nn Etta/Ettie!)

I think counterintuitively Harriet could turn out to be the most unusual choice - we know several Hetties and Hatties but these are their full names, not nicknames. It’s also the most timeless and enduring of your choices I think.

Kokeshi123 · 05/05/2020 14:17

As a PP said, Etta and Ada are becoming popular right now because people are trying to find something that's less popular than Ella and Ava. So if you want a name that isn't going to crop up everywhere, I wouldn't choose these. Ditto Esme. Harriet would probably stand out the most.

LotusClover · 05/05/2020 14:39

Ada Clementine - lovely. Not keen on Clementine but I think the short first name and long middle name combo works nicely.

Hattie (Harriet) Wren - lovely. Harriet is unique and not too popular. Wren is growing on me.

Etta Josephine - not keen. It has a nice flow but neither of these names are my taste.

Mabel - not my taste. But I think it would work well with something like Olivia or Evelyn as the middle name.

Etta Sunday - don't like. Plus, for me she would absolutely have to be born on a Sunday for this name to be pulled off, unless Sunday has some other importance or significance. Otherwise it's a no.

zscaler · 05/05/2020 15:21

I like Harriet and Mabel best. Both lovely names and not very commonly used at all.

123Dancewithme · 05/05/2020 17:58

Harriet Wren. Ada, Mabel and Etta are all getting quite popular. Harriet feels a bit more classic.

daisypond · 05/05/2020 18:01

as we live in London and there will likely be a couple in each class.
Less likely in London than anywhere else. Schools are very multicultural with a huge variety of names.

pilates · 05/05/2020 18:04

Esme Josephine

Adelais · 05/05/2020 23:07

I like Ada, Mabel and Harriet though agree Ada is getting popular now. I’m not keen on Etta.

georgialondon · 05/05/2020 23:11

I like them all apart from Hattie. Always loved Etta.

I love the name Mabel but don't like the Mabelline link so I wouldn't use that myself.

georgialondon · 05/05/2020 23:13

We are in central London and one of my children has a top 5 name. Haven't met a single other one with the same name as London is so multicultural.

Springb0ks · 05/05/2020 23:21

I love them all apart from Ada Clementine. We have similar taste in names. What about... Aletta, Eliza, Louisa, Alice?

Harriet Wren is my favourite on your list.
