Can anyone suggest any girls' names that sound strong, confident and self assured? I'm helping think of a name for my DNiece and would really appreciate some suggestions!

I love the name Alex. I know it could go either way, for a girl or a boy, but to me it sounds confident and carefree for a girl.

MrsTerryPratchett · 05/05/2020 02:07

I'd have to disagree. I think 'boys' names for girls give a weak message. Boys never get given 'girls' names and that's because it's seen as a demotion for boys. Which means you think giving a boys' name to a girl is somehow a promotion. I think it's the opposite of strong.

Alex isn't a boy's name though. It's a nickname which could be for either Alexander or Alexandra.

And Alexandra fits the "strong and self assured" bill perfectly.

Claudia is nice

Allegra - it means happiness
agree that Elizabeth and Katharine are strong, classic names
Caroline - I don't much like the name but I've never met one I would dare cross. They are always a force to be reckoned with! And Carrie is a cute shortened version.
Claudia - no idea why but it feels strong
Portia - Shakespeare's strongest heroine
Hero

I know a woman called Aroha - pronounced Arrow - every time I hear her name it sounds so strong and powerful, I love it.

Definitely Alexandra too. that's a great name.

Boys never get given 'girls' names and that's because it's seen as a demotion for boys.

Peyton Manning, Terry Bradshaw, Lindsay Buckingham, Sandy Koufax, Stacy Keach and Leslie Nielsen didn't fare too badly despite their, um, demotions Wink And I wouldn’t classify Stevie Nicks, Glenn Close, Drew Barrymore, Daryl Hannah and Sean Young as weak.

MrsTerryPratchett · 06/05/2020 02:06

All those are culturally boys names.

babynamelover · 06/05/2020 02:11

Aroha is a Maaori name it should be pronounced Arrow-huh :)
