Just idle musings really and I wondered what everyone else thought.
I seem to be hearing Penelope a lot from friends that are expecting.

Probably Wilfred because of Boris. I think it's an awful name personally and Wilf is even worse.

Is Dorothy really popular? One of my aunt's is called Dorothy and she hates it She says no one even calls her by her full name it is always Dot, Dottie etc. Very very old fashioned name

ArchbishopOfBanterbury · 03/05/2020 15:13

Oscar has been super popular in my area recently.

daisypond · 03/05/2020 15:14

Oscar was current in my area over 20 years ago. Definitely gone by now.

SliAnCroix · 03/05/2020 15:16

Names like Rhoda, Zelda , Lois.

Margot is here already. Reading some of these suggestions, the names are not new!!

Wolfgirrl · 03/05/2020 15:21

If it goes full circle the 2000s ones might come back at some point. Louise, Stacey, Katie, Chantelle, Hannah, Leanne.

For boys Ryan, Kieran, Sam, Tom, Connor

MairzyDoats · 03/05/2020 15:28

Rather like @45toastofthetown says, I suspect there is going to be (or there is already) a move away from the rather flowery Victorian style names towards tidier (yet still vintage) names like Audrey, Edith, Maud.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 03/05/2020 15:40

Edith, Maud, Ethel, Betty, Wilfred, Cecil, Cyrus... are all terrible names in my opinion. My GM had one of the above names and she absolutely hated it. It was passed down the family and she grudgingly gave it as a middle name for her eldest DD.

I’m expecting my second DD in September and believe we have chosen another timeless name Like DD1’s name. I don’t think people will immediately make assumptions about their ages based on it. DD1’s name comes from an Italian name (I learned after we named her) and DD2’s name will be Irish but DH’s entire family are Irish so we’re pleased with the connection.

Cheeryandmerry · 03/05/2020 15:48

Honestly, I think by the time people are posting about an unusual name the ship has sailed. I have a friend who chose Sacha for her son, convinced that it was unusual but just starting to be on the up. There were three including hers in our reception class Grin. We chose what we thought was a very common biblical name for DS1 (one of the apostles) and we’ve never met another his age.

A lot of the names already mentioned I think have been and gone in popularity.

SliAnCroix · 03/05/2020 15:56

Audrey, Edith and Maud will go a bit more mainstream, totally see that.

Ontheblackhill · 03/05/2020 16:05

Joan , Margaret, Annie and other 1930's names.

ClementineTangerine · 03/05/2020 16:07

Otis and Maeve I think will become popular

LotusClover · 03/05/2020 16:13

Based solely on MN, Clementine and Theodora are the names I see appearing the most. I strongly dislike both of them Confused

SliAnCroix · 03/05/2020 16:15

joan , margaret, and annie yes, and jane and jean/jeannie, mary, ruth

CheriLittlebottom · 03/05/2020 16:18

I think the names of babies born in the 50s and 60s will be coming back. Christine. Dorothy. Margaret. Christopher. Richard. Anthony.

Basically people name children after their parents and grandparents. These names are the next wave.

OldEvilOwl · 03/05/2020 16:20

Cillian

Adelais · 03/05/2020 17:09

I keep hearing Ada a lot for baby girls.
I think ‘vintage’ style names are still trendy and will be for the next few years.

maria860 · 03/05/2020 18:06

Maeve , Elodie , Wren
Currently having a girl and names are so much harder then I anticipated

Marimari93 · 03/05/2020 18:28

Here is my prediction.

Because people are getting sick of frilly names like Arabella, Melania, Gabriella..... because people are getting sick of common names like Olivia, Amelia, Ellie, Ava...... because people are getting sick of twee twee names like Ophelia, Genevieve, Ottilie, Persephone...... because people are getting sick of old lady names like Margot, Edie, Mabel..... because people are getting sick of names that begin with El or E or A or end in E/Y or A like Eleanor, Aliya, Rosa, Sophia

The plain, straight forward, no nonsense names that could weave between working class and middle class no problemo will boom in popularity.

Names like:

Ruth
Anne
Lucy
Emma
Sara
Jane
Claire

Maaaybe even names like:
Lorraine
Judith
Carly
Carol
Janet
Sally
Christine too

I only considered girls names because boys names tend to be Jack, George, Henry, Harry with a few newbies coming and going

IndiaMay · 03/05/2020 18:35

Since I was 18 ive liked Romily. People used to look horrified (and mildly disgusted) when I said the name. Now 12 years later I've seen it on around 6 threads this month as a nice suggestion. I think that will be the next Margot

Marimari93 · 03/05/2020 18:35

From what I've observed on MN anyway 🧐

Sb131216 · 03/05/2020 18:36

I keep hearing milo, arlo, still archie and Alfie, asher seems to be getting more common and for girls so many bonnie, aurora and ada seem to be getting more popular

30daysoflight · 03/05/2020 18:41

I think that Leviathan might be big Grin

therealmrshardy · 03/05/2020 18:45

Vintage names will still be popular but maybe mlre 20’s-30’s that Victorian

Ouchjuststoodonlego · 03/05/2020 20:54

I'm finding reading these really interesting. Thank you.
I agree with Ada and Cillian. I have definitely heard both more.
I'm not sure how I feel about 50/60s names. My parents and there siblings are children of those decades and all have names that I can't see being popular again - Dennis, Julie, Tracey, Sharon, Gordon etc

KindnessCrusader · 03/05/2020 21:03

Edith, Maria, Daphne.
