Ancestors names

It just struck me (probably obvious) that this may be a good way to help with choosing first or middle names for a LO? It would give the name deeper more personal meaning.

For eg I found two in my family that I am warming to: Winifred and Minna.

Any that you've stumbled upon doing family research that you might use?

Abner. It was my DP's great grandfather's name.

Some lovely names in our family trees. My husbands side is Ashkenazi Jewish and mine hasn't left the North West of England since the 1700s 😂
Our eldest was named after his dad as he was expected to die within his first year and our youngest was named Christopher after my husband's mother (Christine) who died when he was very young.
We used 2 ancestor names as middle names. David and Simon.

My great-grandfather (who died when I was a child so I did know him) was Charles and I used that as a mn for DS. My grandfather has been doing his family tree and there are lots of names that have come up repeatedly that I'm tempted to use as mn for any future dc.

DS was named for my grandad (first name) and DH's grandad (middle name). Only we later found out that DH's grandad was Charles not George - George was DH's great uncle. So DS is actually named for my grandad and DH's great uncle Grin

My uncle did my paternal family tree and my paternal grandmothers side spent a good 300 years in the same small area with the same 4 names repeated each generation... no inspiration there.

My maternal side however stems from Scotland with a pretty interesting history, including a clan tartan and a famous general. Didn't use any of the names in the end but we were tempted.

Both DC ended up with names inspired by pop culture... cool stories behind both still.

majesticallyawkward · 02/05/2020 14:03

Both middle names are after my parents... only no one had the heart to tell us we'd spelled one of them wrong 😳

One of my ancestors was called Saint. This was in the 1700s. My ancestry is English, Welsh and Manx.

In addition to Saint: Nathaniel, Edmund, Eric, Roy, Frank, Geoffrey, Giles, Philip, Adam, Alan, Richard, Simon, Nicholas, Huw, Tomos, Owen, John and Jeremiah.

I would consider Edmund, Alan, Tomos and Owen.

Unusual names were Johem, Jabez, Lazarus, Charolus, Williemus, Faulkender, Foster, Mira, Levi and Israel.

For the ladies: Margaret, Ann, Gertrude, Winnifred, Susanna, Elisabeth, Lowri, Mari, Elin, Alis, Olwen, Joney, Rebecca, Maria, Rita, Frances, Freda, Isabel, Cecily and Naomi.

I would consider Mari, Alys (instead of Alis), Maria, Cecily, Naomi and Susanna.

Unusual names were: Cleoner, Christiane, Loura (suspect a typo for Laura), Vida, Jennett, Hester, Thirza, Keziah, Christabel and Miriam. I like Hester and Keziah.

All of my family names are fairly standard: Thomas, John, David etc however in my husbands ancestry (I’ve been doing the family trees recently) there is a Hercules and a Decimus which is a bit out there!

For girls again lots of the names are fairly standard (Mary, Elizabeth, Sarah, Rose) but because I am Welsh there are some interesting names ; Gwenllian, Menna, Bronwen and Rhiannon to name a few. When I heard the name Gwenllian as a child I was enchanted by it and decided then that if I ever had a daughter she would have Gwenllian somewhere in her name

Iris and Adelaide are two of the names from my tree which I hope to use in the future. Found a few old biblical names - Zillah, Tryphena and Absalom - which are all lovely but not sure I will be the one to revive them Smile

YetiAnotherNameChange · 02/05/2020 15:08

My ancestors were completely boring. Lots of George, Mary, Elizabeth, John etc type names going back years, all named after their father or grandfather or uncle!
That said, I quite like most of the names and would probably use them.

Marimari93 · 02/05/2020 15:34

@theseriousmoonlight Abner is lovely.

Adelita is a name I like from my family history (both the sound and meaning) however I will never use it because although I like the name, the person behind the name was apparently not nice

Can't remember boy names from ancestors will ask when we tell family.. but girls wise, Elizabeth runs for generations and I think is classic and timeless for middle name. Going back there are Joan, Eliza, suzanna, Martha, Anne, Mary, Margaret and more Elizabeth..
